We did a "doing time" tour of Fremantle Prison. The guide was great - funny, interesting, and good at handling a diverse group of people. The tour takes you through the front yard, cells, chapel, kitchen, exercise yards etc. It is hard to believe it was used as a prison until 1991!! It gives you a good insight into how... more

We did two tours back to back and they were worth every cent. There are parts of the prison and displays you can see for free but to actually go into the prison itself though the cells and courtyards you need to do the tours. This prison was built by convicts, for convicts but was in use up until the... more

If you're looking for something different to do whilst in Fremantle, then take my advice and do a Tunnels Tour at the Fremantle Prison. I was a little hesitant when booking this tour as the beginning of the trip starts by climbing 20 metres down a dark dark tunnel, but fear quickly subsided once we got going. Before the tour... more

We arrived obviously at a peak time - 12.30pm on a Sunday in Summer. It was quite busy and we ended up doing the 'Doing Time Tour' with about 35 people. Our guide was very friendly and informative and it was interesting. It took about 1 hr 15 mins. The only thing that marred the experience was the fact we... more

Costs: $18 Lasts : 1.5 hrs for standard tour I've never visited a prison as a tourist attraction before, so wasn't quite sure what to expect. However it was a fascinating and genuinely interesting visit. Lasting about 1.5 hrs in total for the standard day trip (night time and tunnel trips are also available offered). The guided tour takes you... more

I only took a daytime tour as I was staying in Perth not Fremantle. The guides were informative and amusing without being overbearing. The tour proceeded at the right pace: not too slow, but not at breakneck speed. It reinforced my knowledge of the privations many prisoners suffer, particularly when prison accommodation lags behind the most basic of standard 'outside... more

Excellent tour of a prison with lots of interesting history. The prison shows how the cells of prisoners changed through the lifespan of the prison. It also reminded me of the film 'Shawshank Redeption'. more

We visited in November 2007 There are several types of tour, we just turned up and went on an 90 minute daytime tour, the guide had been a prison officer there prior to it closing in early 1990's. Reading the first post on this tour would certainly agree that the guides give a very informative commentary, our group consisted of... more

Fremantle Prison was built in the 1850s to house the convict labour that had been brought to the developing colony. As Fremantle began to expand the settlement's water supply began to dwindle. The drinking water was running out and yet the Prison gardens were lush. It turns out that the Prison is actually built on an underground reservoir. The tunnels... more
