Owner description: Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.

This 19th century prison was still in use until recently; hard to believe given what one sees of the place. Thick-walled stone buildings surrounded by a wall. You can take a tour, but if so, the nighttime tours are the most interesting. But you do not need to take a tour to go into the forecourt, or to get information... More

The Torchlight Tour is a tour that is done around the Prison with only a torch for each visitor (which you keep) and the lights around the Prison. It was excellent! We had Simon as our guide and he made the tour funny, scary (but kids from about 8+ will enjoy it) and informative. We learnt about their daliy life... More

The tours are great although I would recommend a tour more of the prison cells rather than one that is mostly outside. The tour that I went on was outside and it was very hot. The tour guide was very passionate about his job & had lots of interesting facts to share with us, including facts about the prisoners lives... More

We expected this to be one of the highlights of our trip to Western Australia but sadly it was a bit of a disappointment. There wasa no option but to take one of the organised tours and we took the regular (recommended) one. Our guide while perfectly competent and knowledgeable about the prison but only really became enthusiastic when describing... More

We did the tour which took you through the prison and the guide was brilliant. The history of this prison is amazing.

The tour was great - the guide treated us like prisoners which was fun - any a bit scary. He was an ex prisoner office at the actual prison before it closed. A great visitor attraction - a must see

The prison is one of the star attractions of Fremantle. It is easy to get to by either driving or if you have town accommodation, free bus. You must take a guided tour of the place which is informative. The one problem we experienced was finding out about this matter and the tour hours were that they were not widely... More

Did the tunnel tour this afternoon. Some serious history involved in this tour and to think it was all done by hand and convict labour. Amazing to know what was going on just under our feet (20 meters). Well worth the time and money. Just a shame we didn't have the time to do the other tours. I have no... More
