Description: Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions...
Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.

I went on a night time torchlit tour of this prison in July. The tour takes about 2 hours and it was an amazing thing to do. It makes you thing of the way prisoners were treated in the 1800's, living in cells for 23 hours a day with no electricity, running water or internet. Makes you really appreciate the... More

I did the 'Doing Time Tour'. Other tour options are available. I went around the Visitor Centre and Gift Shop whilst awaiting the start of the tour. A guide ringing a bell signified the start of each tour. 200,000 people visit a year. Pros: -Informative tour highlighting the harshness of prison life. Our guide - James - was quite a... More

Did the under ground tour with Richard as the guide , what an asset to the tour . What a feat of engineering for its time . Nice to see the attention to detail on safety during the tour and worth doing if you have the time

We did the tunnels tour late in the afternoon (3:25 booking) and are kicking ourselves for not touring the whole facility beforehand, as it was too dark afterwards. Maybe the tour of the tunnels could include a guided tour of the whole facility beforehand :-)

We are very interested in history so the visit to Fremantle was a must do for us and it did not disappoint. It was great value at $20 and is also in the Entertainment book for locals. There are a number of tours available and discounts are given if you book on more than one tour (which doesn't have to... More

Visited WA for a month recently. This was the best thing I done. I found it difficult to come across anything remotely cultural in WA, but the tour here was fantastic. I would definitely recommend it even if your not normally into this sort of thing.

A guided tour is an absolute "must do" for everyone, young and old. The guides will keep it going and know how to "entertain" the customers. It was informative and fun to do. Our tour took about an hour and after that we want to do another one (we did not because of the amount of time we had left... More

Unusual tour, the cells are tiny, how folk managed to breathe at night I can't imagine. I thought the Aboriginal dot drawings in some of the cells poignant. Didn't like to see the hang noose. Not a large yard for exercise either however it is incarceration tho my opinion is that the majority of folk in prisons are there, at least... More

We only did the "breakout tour" - it was entertaining and light. The history tour would provide more detail but I was satisfied with a more light hearted view of things in such a traumatic place. The tour was $20AUD if you choose to do both it's only another $8AUD.

We did the $20 basic tour. Covered all the highlights. Really interesting. Our tour guy Steve was fantastic. I highly recommend this.
