On the skyline of the pretty Moorish town of Tavira stands a strange construction. A cylindrical form on spindly legs with what appears to be a single eye that slowly turns to observe the town, it's presence like that of an alien spaceship from War of the Worlds. The cylinder however contains a delightful camera obscura, and in the cool darkened space it's revolving lens projects telescopic images of the town below onto a large concave screen. The commentator tells you that from ground level you cannot be seen as you observe the comings and goings of the street below. What fun then, when walking through the town, you become aware of the eye turning to face you and you face it, smile and wave at the surprised tourists inside.

A good attraction to visit

A short 15 minute experience but worth it. Our lovely guide had a playful manner explaining all the attractions in Tavira and it was very cool to see the action in real time

A really fun way to look at Tavira, brilliant for all ages. Lasts about 15 minutes and a very unique experience.

After reading reviews I suggested the tour to my family ( including 2 teenagers!). The tour guide is very friendly and speaks good English. My "hard to impress" teens were very much impressed with the tour, as was I . It is very cheap too, only €3.50 pp and €3 for a child. It is a must while in Tavira... More

Well worth a visit, very novel way to get an overview of the town, kids will love it! There is a lift so there is no problem if you have mobility problems.

A very different view of Tavira. Very good focus and views. Like the "move the trucks to the bridge trick" go and find out what I mean. Lift to the top. Only 3.5 Euros good value.

An interesting way to have a guided tour without walking around. It is quite quick and I would have preferred more history, but it's difficult when the guide needs to explain in several different languages.

We went here with our family of five-we all enjoyed the views of the city and the camera device was very neat! The man giving the tour was entertaining and informative and he rattled off many languages. It's a great quick stop and neat to be inside a water tower!

Built into an old water tower, the camera obscura is a simple attraction who will allow you to discover a 360 degrees panorama of Tavira through a simple system based on a mirror and two lenses. My kids (10 and 12) have found that "super cool", while I was expecting a "not very impressive" from them. Cheat attraction, and quiet... More

The camera obscura in Tavira is built in a disused water tower and dates from about the mid-18th century. But the principle is centuries older. It's been written about by Aristotle in about 350BC and detailed by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1490. In essence, it uses a darkened room, a pinhole to let light in, a convex lens and a... More
