On the skyline of the pretty Moorish town of Tavira stands a strange construction. A cylindrical form on spindly legs with what appears to be a single eye that slowly turns to observe the town, it's presence like that of an alien spaceship from War of the Worlds. The cylinder however contains a delightful camera obscura, and in the cool darkened space it's revolving lens projects telescopic images of the town below onto a large concave screen. The commentator tells you that from ground level you cannot be seen as you observe the comings and goings of the street below. What fun then, when walking through the town, you become aware of the eye turning to face you and you face it, smile and wave at the surprised tourists inside.

Very interesting for a snap shot view of Tavira and the young lady presenter was very knowledgable in several languages. Well worth a visit even for us 'locals'.

We were persuaded to visit this attraction as we walked past by some travellers who had just experienced it. It was brilliant and the staff member who gave the commentary was excellent at her job. We enjoyed an aerial rotational view of Tavira with landmarks and historical information given - all without moving!

Cheryl and I enjoyed our visit to the camera obscura, which provided us with an interesting way to see a bit more of Tavira. The guide was helpful and explained a lot about the history of Tavira and its surroundings. I recommend this attraction to anybody.

Amazing views of the whole town and your guide does a few clever tricks, a bit more of the science behind the camera would be nice.

Found by chance and went for it. Had our toddler with us and the guide was very welcoming anyway. I'd recomend starting your visit to the town with the Camera Obscura - the guide was very informative and answered all sorts of questions regarding the town, certain buildings, what's happening where in the evening like live fado and so on,... This attraction is not hyped in its publicity, but we would recommend spending 30 minutes n the water tower a the top of the town to gaze down on all its features and the surrounding area. You are shown around the town by a knowledgeable and helpful guide who is very helpful on access to places of interest, opening times... More

You buy a ticket, and go up in an elevator with the guide. You watch a real live projection of the city in the middle of the tower. The guide works "the weels and ropes" and you watch. She tells you what you see, so you have an overlook of Tavira's highlights. After a few minutes you go down again.
