On the skyline of the pretty Moorish town of Tavira stands a strange construction. A cylindrical form on spindly legs with what appears to be a single eye that slowly turns to observe the town, it's presence like that of an alien spaceship from War of the Worlds. The cylinder however contains a delightful camera obscura, and in the cool darkened space it's revolving lens projects telescopic images of the town below onto a large concave screen. The commentator tells you that from ground level you cannot be seen as you observe the comings and goings of the street below. What fun then, when walking through the town, you become aware of the eye turning to face you and you face it, smile and wave at the surprised tourists inside.

Many visitors seem not to realise that the artifact inside an old water tower is an old design from the European Renaissance with the techniques of the "Camera Obscura". Sure you do not need to enter this attraction to see the nice skyline of Tavira, but is fascinating to see the clever technique used by our ancestors with poles and... More

It's a nice tower where you can watch the city on a special way. You go into the elevator and watch there the city.

I would recommend an early visit for travellers new to Tavira as it gives you a birds eye view of the town and the young lady was very pleasant and knowledgeable.

It was ok just a video camera projected on a dish. It was better going down the stairs on the outside.

We have visited Tavira many times but had never noticed this water tower attraction, reasonable entrance fee we decided to to give it a try, we were taken up to the tower in a lift which also gives you great views of the town. once inside a picture is projected onto a stone which turns round giving you a view... In fact go there first before visiting the romantic town of Tavira on foot, it really brings the town to life and amazing that the technique was first discovered by Leonardo all those years ago. I loved it so did Grandma and the kids so a good all round family attraction.

A treat to be shown the camera obscura by the man who designed and organized it ! Right next to the pousada.

Is camera obscura is mentioned in the travel books, and it is well worth doing. We visited in January and were the only people there. The person who took us up the tower was very knowledgable about Tavira and the camera obscura views were great.
