I would not reccomend you visit the salt mines, especially if you only have a few days in Krakow - there are far better things you could do with your time, e.g. visit one of the castles. Even spending a day taking photos and getting lost in the old town or the jewish quarter would be FAR more enjoyable and... more

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is a must-see in this fascinating part of the country! Climbing down the wooden stairs down into complete darkness under the ground is an experience unto itself -- but what lies beyond is absolutely spectacular. The tour guide takes groups through a number of underground chambers filled with beautiful reliefs carved into the walls, intricately detailed... more

Make sure you are in good shape to descend hundreds of steps. But the tour was well worth it. And there is an interesting elevator to return you to the top.. even my claustrophobic husband was able to make the trip. more

Even though I'm a bit claustrophobic, I really enjoyed visiting the caves, which are within very easy reach of Cracow's town centre. Allow half a day for your visit. Thoroughly recommended. more

From statues of 7 dwarves to the Pope, scenes of Polish folklore and of the Bible, from the tiles on the floor to the chandeliers hanging above, from pools of saturated saline water to an entire cathedral, this site has something for everyone and it is all carved out of salt! Over the course of 700 years the miners of... more

There are basically two ways to take tours of the mines: as part of a larger tour group leaving from Krakow or as an individual. Group tours are easily booked from Krakow, there are literally dozens of operators around the city and even last minute tours seemed to be accessible. I travelled as an individual, taking a mini-bus from the... more

this salt mine is definitely worth a visit! granted that it is the first (and possibly, only) salt mine i've ever visited...but the history and ambience in this place is simply amazing. There are many statues carved out of salt, and they are seriously amazing (and beautiful) Some of the detailing is so intricate that i really marvel at the... more

I went along to the Salt mine in May 2009. The great thing to consider is - since you are under ground it is the perfect tour to do when the weather is not too flash (or too hot as the case may be in summer!) The tour was informative, plenty of time to take pictures (slightly odd that you... more
