While in Vilnius, we (me and my family incl. 2 small children) decided to visit Trakai. To get to Trakai from Vilnius bus station is quite easy and cheap; eur 1,67 per person, ride takes just over 30 minutes. The bus drops you at what is apparently the Trakai busstation. The castle on the island however is a 2 km... More

Although the weather wasn't great when I visited it meant Trakai castle was quite quiet which meant that it was easy to look round the castle without too many others blocking the way. The castle is in really good condition and the exhibits in the rooms really explain the history well. A section was closed whilst the exhibits are re-vamped... More

I actually went to Trakai castle in Dec 2014 AND May 2013. December was cold, with snow around and much of the lake was frozen, there was only a handful of visitors and few shops were open - it was awesome. In May it was scorching hot, with many more visitors to the area but still really cool. The castle... More

One of the most beautiful and interesting places in Lithuania in terms of history, nature and culture. There are actually two castles - one on an island in the middle of a lake, and one on the peninsula. Both were built in late 14th century by Lithuanian Grand Duke Kęstutis and his son Vytautas. Island castle today is the best... More

There is a world of difference between the general gist of 'Average' and 'Very Good'. Trakai castle is just 'Good'. It's amazing location, I'll give it that. Trakai in summer is full of life and lovely cafes to sit and enjoy the weird little island world around you, and in winter you can go have fun out on the frozen... More

This was my favorite site when I visited Vilnius in October 2014. It is not too far out of the way and is a definite must see if you are visiting Lithuania! The town is also very nice and quaint and there are shops near the castle as well. Definitely put this on the top of your to-do list!

This trip was amazing although the castle was closed. The 'town' has a unique vibe, the lake is stunning, the setting amazing!

Excellent from the moment we arrived at the frozen lakeside and saw the red walls and roofs on the island. Its a 30 minute walk from the bus station where we arrived after paying 1.70 to get there by bus from Vilnius. The exhibits including restoration models and history of the castle were excellent as were the many coin hoards... More

This is the biggest castle in country. Nothing compare with British castles or towers but still nice and cozy. There is a lake around offers some interesting attractions on water. Some good restaurants not far in town.
