The general ambiance of Trakai and the surrounding area is very laid back. Even though it is a tourist hot spot your are not bothered or harassed by vendors. Prices are reasonable and the food around the castle is decent. The castle itself is picturesque, interesting and has a range of activities on site (such as archery) to keep you... More

The only castle in Eastern Europe that was built on an island. Initiated by Grand Duke Kestutis but was completed by his son Grand Duke Vytautas instead. Expanded bit by bit and now covering the whole island. There are different events within the castle depending on the festival dates, you may go on to the website and check it out... More

I thought rather than write about the castle (which is lovely) I'd write how to get there. It's less than €4 return on public transport & there is virtually a bus every 20 mins or so from Vilnius, they tickets are sold as singles on the bus or at information, as it depends which company u get on, ie. who... The castle is in the most beautiful setting - on an island surrounded by the lake. We were there very early so we could not go through but we could still cross to the island and walk all around the outside of the castle.

We enjoyed a day trip to Trakai to visit the famous castle. It's set in a gorgeous location surrounded by lakes and is very well presented. We didn't pay the fee to enter, it was just enough to enjoy it from the outside and to walk around it.

This castle was probably the highlight of my Lithuania trip. Set apart from the main town of Trakai on an island but accessible by footbridge, it looks like a magical fairy tale castle from the outside. Inside, the exhibitions are amazing: porcelain, weaponry, tapestries, a room dedicated to portraits and icons of St John of Nepomuk. The placing of the... More

We really enjoyed our day out with our guide/driver to Trakai, after going to the Holocaust museum. The castle is pretty exotic to look at and the history is very interesting. It is situated on a beautiful lake and there are plenty of eateries around the shore. The castle is worth visiting and you can also hire pedaloes and other... More

Undeniably pretty place, very pleasant to stroll around and on a nice day (like we had) nice to sit for a bit taking in the view and watching the world go by.
