Stopped here on our final excursion, from Klaipeda to Vilnius via Kaunas, my cousin having noted in the morning that we would "visit another castle". Wow! The setting, on an island in a small lake, was picture-perfect. One could just picture some medieval force laying siege to that well-placed fortress. While the weather was far from ideal, being rainy and... More

I really wanted to come to that place. My first visit in Lithuania had to take me there! And I was right, it is one of the nicest castles I've ever seen. I was lucky and we had great weather so we rented pedalo. We had very good time on the clean water lake with the view of the castle... More

Combining a tour to the castle with a walk around Trakai town made for a nice half day get-a-way from Vilnius. We took a boat across to the castle on a cold, rainy a.m., enjoyed the shelter and history of the various rooms of the castle and then walked across the bridge to Trakai village. Here we enjoyed a Karaimai... More

Trakai castle is very nicely reconstructed and there are lot of historical objects on display that worth seeing. I also like the small post office in the tower. But the best is the location, the entrance on the bridges above the crystal clear water. Once I would love to come here with a boat. Trakai town itself is very nice... More

Go before 11 to beat the crowds. Easy to walk through on your own with English explanations. This castle was destroyed and rebuilt so not very old but has period items on view. Worth a visit and a nice drive out of Vilnius. We took our own car and its easy and free to park and walk in.

Worth a trip to see the castle itself, which had exhibits written up in English and German as well as local language. A quick look round takes about an hour, more if you are interested in reading everything

I booked a one day tour out of Vilnius. It was a small group with English-speaking guide. The bus trip to Trakai took 30 minutes and we had four hours to visit before the bus left for Vilnius again. The tour started with a guided tour at the castle and then everyone could walk around freely.

Well worth the visit. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the beautiful surrounds. The Castle has ben restored and it is also worth exploring the ruins of the peninsula fort as well.
