Came here from Vilnius. Took one of the convenient buses from the Vilnius Bus Terminal (1.7 euros one way). Buses leave pretty frequently - every 20 minutes or so. You can buy tickets in the bus terminal ticket office or directly from the driver. He will even give out change. The bus trip took about 30 minutes. When you get... More

I'm a bit torn on this one. First off, the castle is pretty, in a very beautiful environment. However, the renovation isn't done too well and the "new" parts don't mess up with the original. A friend of mine mentioned it's almost impossible to enjoy during the high season because of the crowds, so beware. I was there in late... More

We caught the very cheap train from Vilnius which takes about 35 minutes, It is easy to get there as staff all speak English and the trains are regular. The walk to the lakeside with the castle is about 20 minutes and most of it is pretty. The lakeside is lovely with plenty of bars, restaurants and souvenir chalets. The... More

Some reviews complain that the castle structure is new, and obviously so. Well, if you want shapeless ruins there's an unreconstructed one down the road. For me it's a pleasure to experience a 3-D castle, and this one is gorgeous both seen from afar, on its wooded island, and while you explore it. The museum has an eclectic collection of... More

Not to be missed, even though I went in April and it was quite cold, the scenery is amazing and very worth going.

I enjoyed the drive out of Vilnius. the countryside is beautiful and peaceful. Trakai was easy to find and the roads were in very good condition without much traffic. The castle itself is not too fancy, but interesting. It won't take you long to walk through the castle and around the small island it's located on. There are a few... More

Although the castle is a modern reconstruction, it is still very lovely. There are ample grounds to walk around and once inside there are lots of exhibits and artifacts on display. I think the best displays and comprehensive information is in the tower. If you like history (and reading) you could spend a fair amount of time here. Be warned,... More

I made an impulsive decision to visit the place. It had been raining all day and the weather improved enough to make the trip. The journey involves a half hour bus ride (~ € 2) and fair bit of walking. You walk through a sleepy town to reach the site and the view is quite magnificent. Those who love history... More

Well presented displays inside a lovely C15 brick castle, reconstructed in Soviet times. Half hour (€1.72 pp) bus ride from Vilnius bus station and half hour walk. Castle is on a small island accessed across a bridge and bona fine moat. €5.21 pp entrance fee to wander around, up and down, castle rooms containing displays from C15 to C19. Stop... More
