The stronghold is located in a unique landscape consisting of 32 (?) lakes that are party connected. The stronghold itself is only reachable through a small bridge. It is nicely refurbished. There is also a museum (very new I suppose), however only a few of the old castle rooms can be visited. Though it is worth a visit. From Vilnius... More

We rented a car for a day and enjoyed the freedom of the short drive from Vilnius to Trakai. Although the castle has been rebuilt, it is an excellent example of mid evil times. We visited in the winter and enjoyed the sleepy quietness of the town. The castle had only a few other visitors so we got a good... More

Went here for a day trip from Vilnius. The castle is nice situated in the middle of a lake and it's a nice place to walk around and enjoy the atmosphere. Bring some food so you can sit somewhere along the shore and relax. There is a small city next to the castle where the native people Karaims live. They... More

We took the regular public bus to Trakai, rather than taking a tour, and be warned that it is quite a hike (seemed like at least 2 miles uphill, but probably less) from the bus stop to the castle area. We were pooped by the time we got there, so maybe next time we'll take the easy tourist way and... More

I was taken here by a work colleague, who was kind enough to drive the hour or so from Vilnius to show me this castle, which was not only beautiful but was imbued with history of a country, and a region, that has a troubled, but fascinating past. Well worth a visit. I also managed to buy some excellent amber... More

I had been in-country as part of a U.S. medical relief/education program and had an opportunity to visit Trakai Castle. The castle is as impressive as it is authentic. "Authentic", however, is not meant to imply "original construction" as much of the castle has been rebuilt. Originally built in the 14th century, it was constructed as a strategic defensive position.... More

This castle is very beautiful. You can ask for a guide who will tell you almost everything about the castle and the history. THe castle is situated in the middle of a lake. You can take a ship tour around the caste and you will be able to see nicer things. The nature is fantastic. I recommend to everyone who... More

I took a day tour from Vilnius to Trakai Castle. It is such a beautiful spot and I took some amazing photos. But I did not find it is so interesting and the history was selected presented. Many restaurants around but not many places for take away coffee.

Troki Castle has a long Polish history, much of which has been heavily rewritten since WWII by the now dominant Lithuanian ethnic majority. The Castle gives a wonderful impression in a serene environment, but much of the Castle and grounds have been reconstructed so that not a lot of originality remains. Nevertheless, Troki stands as an interesting monument to an... More
