This is a true old Russian Soviet type of statue known as the Freedom Monument. It is in the center of Bribivas Street, with the street circling the monument. It's good to look at up close, however, for a picture, you need to be some distance away to get a good perspective as the monument is so large.

I was here many times 20+ years ago when Latvia got their independence. The soldiers are still there with their silly walk.

This is a huge monument in the centre of Riga and is a tourist magnet. It is rather bombastic and in the soviet style, which is surprising seeing as it represents freedom from the soviet era.

This monument is one of the Rigas symbols. I like it, despite it's hard to take a good photo of it because it's placed on very tall pedestal. You can also buy nice suvenirs in the form of this statue.

Can't miss this colossal statue since it is located at the entrance to the old town! All monuments about freedom are worth visiting!

This is just an impressive, carefully-located monument to walk by. However, the long history swirling around it, especially in relation to the Soviet occupation, makes it much more amazing. More artistic than most.

It seems both impossible and a little daft reviewing a monument, but this one is worth seeing simply for how much it means to the city and to Latvia. It's arguably Riga's most recognisable symbol. Well, that and the Laima clock :)

Probably worth reading up on the history first before you go in order that you can appreciate this monument. Lots of history and lots of pride. Hence its fairly sombre.

Symbol of the Latvian independence and Riga's major landmark - right on the main street connecting the modern Riga and the Old town of Riga.
