Its a monument to see if you are interested in his story or wish to spend time by the canal. We didn't see the changing of the guard so that would have made it more interesting I wouldn't make a visit here unless I'd have other reasons to be in the city. It's very close to the national opera.

This 2 meters tall monument, that stands in the very heart of Riga, is a symbol of Latvia and an homage to the Latvian heroes in the fight for freedom (early 1920s). During the Soviet Union years, the Freedom Monument was considered for demolition but fortunately it resisted every ideologic pressures coming from members of the Communist Party.

I was glad to see the monument but went back 3 times on the hour for the guard changing which completely failed to happen!

It is a very Beautiful monument. It was interesting to watch the guard change, as you can see how serious they hold their place for this monument. The ones who fought for the Latvians freedom are the real hero's. Do not pass this in your visit while in Riga!

situated just on the outskirts of the old town Riga it is a very tall imposing monument. set in the centre of the main road its impossible to miss and is opposite the park. you can walk up the steps and onto the viewing platform around the monument,it representing the freedom of the people and built I think in 1935.

This is a beautiful monument to the memory of all who died fighting for Latvias Freedom. It is lovely to watch the soldiers who stand guard over the monument everyday, to watch them stand at attention and do their marching is spectacular during daylight hours. To see the monument at night while it is lit up is fantastic it is... More

The Freedom monument is guarded by soldiers at daytime. From here, you can explore the old city or the beautiful green parks left and right to it. It's nice to take a photo here, but it's nothing too special. You can't go up the monument or do something special here.

The freedom monument is very impressive and a must see! (although you can't miss it!) The monument is guarded by two Latvian soldiers and if you catch them at the right time (or ask what time) you can see the changing of the guards. There is also a heavy police presence around the monument so if you ever need assistance... More

I'm in riga for 2 weeks and this is an impressive monument and it's also a good point of orientation since it's on the corner of the old city and a good place to meet someone
