A very moving monument

Probably worth reading up on the history first before you go in order that you can appreciate this monument. Lots of history and lots of pride. Hence its fairly sombre.

Symbol of the Latvian independence and Riga's major landmark - right on the main street connecting the modern Riga and the Old town of Riga.

Built in 1935 the monument honours soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence. The artwork on the monument is stunning and detailed. There are guards of honour that guard it from being defaced by graffiti and the like. These guards are like the Queens guards in London and do not move from their spot so tourists (like me) have... This is one of the iconic structures in Riga and the source of much conflict between the Latvians and their Russian occupiers. Thanks to the Russians the monument now has tram lines running around it but this does not stop people congregating around it. It is a must see and a vital part of modern Latvian history.

This monument is located very near the old town in an area with nice gardens and views. It is a monument to freedom and all those who lost their lives because of that. If people make a country this is a symbol of why Latvia is what it is. Nice place that makes you think about the meaning of it.

I gave this a 5 because this is such an important monument to Latvian people. You may or may not find this monument touching (from a purely personal standpoint) but if you're visiting Latvia and want to understand her people and history, this is the national pride and joy of all Latvians. Please do a little reading about this most... More

•Main route thru the picturesque streets of the old town is Kalku street leading from the Stone Bridge (Akmens tilts) to Brivibas street and the Freedom Monument. We were there during the 25th anniversary celebration of the second status of independence. Flowers were laid at the monument which is surrounded by the city central parkland

Monument close to some beautiful parks and gardens in Riga. Ideal as a focus point for meeting etc. Guarded by 2 Russian soldiers when I visited due to some anniversary.

Very, very impressive monument in the heart of Riga. Very close to all the best shops and cafes, also a short walk from the lovely park with the padlock bridge. Loved walking around Riga and discovering all the history that is still so present in the city.

Nice monument to Latvian Independence. Nothing special but worth a look and as it is positioned on a main route into the old town there is no excuse not to give it 5 mins of your time. Next to a pleasant park.
