I gave this a 5 because this is such an important monument to Latvian people. You may or may not find this monument touching (from a purely personal standpoint) but if you're visiting Latvia and want to understand her people and history, this is the national pride and joy of all Latvians. Please do a little reading about this most... More

•Main route thru the picturesque streets of the old town is Kalku street leading from the Stone Bridge (Akmens tilts) to Brivibas street and the Freedom Monument. We were there during the 25th anniversary celebration of the second status of independence. Flowers were laid at the monument which is surrounded by the city central parkland

Monument close to some beautiful parks and gardens in Riga. Ideal as a focus point for meeting etc. Guarded by 2 Russian soldiers when I visited due to some anniversary.

Very, very impressive monument in the heart of Riga. Very close to all the best shops and cafes, also a short walk from the lovely park with the padlock bridge. Loved walking around Riga and discovering all the history that is still so present in the city.

Nice monument to Latvian Independence. Nothing special but worth a look and as it is positioned on a main route into the old town there is no excuse not to give it 5 mins of your time. Next to a pleasant park.

The monument is located in parklands at the edge of the old town. We spent some time here watching the world go by. There are guards positioned there all day and it makes for a good photo opportunity. The nearby sky bar is great to watch sun setting.

The symbol monument is not impressive but it is placed in a good spot, in a city center next to a water cannal and a park. You can find a Laima chocolate store nearby. Very good chocolate. They change guards every hour but not nonstop. You might miss it.

Its a monument to see if you are interested in his story or wish to spend time by the canal. We didn't see the changing of the guard so that would have made it more interesting I wouldn't make a visit here unless I'd have other reasons to be in the city. It's very close to the national opera.

This 2 meters tall monument, that stands in the very heart of Riga, is a symbol of Latvia and an homage to the Latvian heroes in the fight for freedom (early 1920s). During the Soviet Union years, the Freedom Monument was considered for demolition but fortunately it resisted every ideologic pressures coming from members of the Communist Party.

I was glad to see the monument but went back 3 times on the hour for the guard changing which completely failed to happen!
