If you visit Tartu in summertime, the old city is very alive. Due to the University-life in Tartu, you will find that there are very much young people both day and night time. There are lots of cafés, bars and restaurants close to the walking street in the center. You can also find at least one vinoteq if interested. Old... More

The integrity of the old town appears to have been fairly well adhered to. Tourist signage to all sights is excellent. The visual pollution from advertising etc has been kept to a minimum. Look out for the eclectic variety of cycle stands and traffic bollards. The old town is very pedestrian friendly.

Had a stopover enroute to Cesis, this town is full of energy. There was a cycling event in town that day when I visited and you can see a lot of people along the roads cheering. Lovely town with lots of nice restaurants. The tourist information desk provides a walking guide around the town but it will take up 1-2... More

Comparing to the old town of Tallinn, which I have visited a several times, the old city of Tartu is smaller, but also has a more authentic feel in it. You can actually enjoy it alone, at least in May. Nice restaurants and bars, beautiful old university buildings, churches and town hall, plus a recommended university botanical garden (outdoors free... More

I really like Tartu, it is charming little city, where you do not feel the pressure and high speed of life. You can just walk and think. Believe me, when you are walking in Tartu, you think positive thoughts, because you have time for it, you have your own personal space around you, no-one will interrupt you, if you want... More

Visited Tartu for the first time and it was very positive suprise even though had read quite a number of information in advance. The old town is so compact that everything is within 15 min walking distance! The old town is built with 1-3 floor high buidnings, beautiful mixture of wooden houses and stone buidnings from 1800 century. Shopping is... More

Tartu is a very modern and international city. It is a typical student city which lives 24/. The environment is clean and tidy. There is a nice promenade, the town hall square.

the whole city centre of Tartu is cool: the park, some nice churches, the toy museum, the hall square.. the visit is taking 2 hours more or less, but it is absolutely worth a visit.

We came on a day trip via the train froTallinn, only about 2 hours and €10, the trains are very efficient. We followed the city guide round the old town and had a great time, so much to see, many statues & monuments. Walking at times was difficult due to the snow & ice but don't let that put you... More

Lovely to walk around the old city although it was bitterly cold and under snow. the architecture is gorgeous and a lot smaller than Tallin Old Town. There's loads of restaurants around so you can taste many different local dishes at resonable prices.
