At the time of visiting the pathways up to the higher castle were closed due to the lower castle being rebuilt. So instead of walking up we took the funicular railway which you reach on the opposite side of the hill behind the archaeological museum. The views from the top over Vilnius are very good. The museum here is very small, and (except for those fascinated by 16th century weaponry) rather dull, although there are some great diaoramas showing how the castle area of Vilnius changed and developed over the centuries that are worth looking at.
