A great variety of animal life. Good bird watching possibilities, it is worth trying several times of a year as birds of passage come, settle, and go. There is a very interesting facility for injured birds; they are cured then rehabilitated in huge cage tents where they start flying again. Interesting skanzen type show of animal husbandry and typical domestic... More

This is a great window to Hungary's history and tradition. The small village of Hotobagy has a nice museum explaining the life of shepherds and a very good restaurants. It is a touristy place, but still very enjoyable.

this is a nice stop when on holiday, the wagon ride is very bumpy and apprx. 1.25hrs. long so be prepared. the Hungarian cowboys and animals were great to finally see after reading about them for years. there are several other tourist things to do close by too. there are many bugs on the wagon ride.

Highlight of the trip to the Hortobagy was definitely the hour and a half-long horsedrawn jaunt into the wide open Puszta plains. It really gave sin some small way an idea how our ancestors travelled through the countryside until the advent of the motor car and paved roads. On the way we were shown some of the animals and customs... More

We visited the Stud of Mata and thoroughly enjoyed. The views were not jaw-dropping but the experience was rich and fulfilling. It remains one of the highlights of our trip. But the process of getting there and back was not all that smooth. Here are some tips to help anyone interested. Hopefully it makes things easier. Various programs available besides... More

Your trip to Hortobagy National Park isn't complete without a horse show. Take the guided tour over the puszta and see the typical big horn cows from up close and be amazed by what the 'csikosok' (the Hungarian horsemen in their traditional costumes) can do with a horse.

Just too crowded it is not so natural. Bird watch is amusing. You can also visit the rural colonies and see old kind of domestic animals which serve as gene-bank. Black pottery is unusualy extraordinary.

I live nearby and keep on going there to visit, there is always something new to see. Bird watching, dark sky star watching tours, horse shows, cultural programs on the train on the dam of the lake, boat rip on the river, carriage tour in the Puszta, etc.

Hortobágy National park is one of the iconic places of Hungary. The largest and oldest National Park in the North-Eastern part of the country. From Budapest will take a 2 hours drive to reach the area, but to get acquantied with it, it takes a life time. One of the in-land areas within Europe where you still can see the... More
