As lovers of opera, we had feared that the current nightly performances of Don Giovanni may have been jaded 'tourist shows', but were very pleasantly surprised! The Stavovske Divadlo (Estates Theatre) is an exquisite, carefully restored, historic building - worth seeing in itself. Because it is small for an opera house, performances are very intimate, and its great acoustics assist... More

I had the opportunity to watch an impressive performance of mozart's "Don Giovanni" with excellent musicians and great singers. This together with the fact that mozart himself premiered this opera in this marvelous room, made this an unforgettable experience. highly recommended.

This is an experience not to be missed if you are in Prague. The theater itself is beautiful and makes you feel like you're going back in time. The performance was superb, although there are no subtitles. You may benefit from reading a synopsis before or after, though the actors are so expressive it's fairly easy to follow along. We... As a musician I was thrilled just about the idea of being in the same theatre where Mozart premiered Don Giovanni. The theatre is very impressive, so small and beautifully preserved that you could think you actually are in the 18th century. The big surprise for me was the great quality of the musicians and singers, I don't know why,... More

The exterior can be appreciated for the late eighteenth century architecture. But the draw of this building is for the person who appreciates classical music and the knowledge the Mozart premiered Don Giovanni here. During the tourist season the opera is performed nightly or almost nightly. Sitting in the theater where this premier occurred is an experience-not just for music... More

On reading that this was where Mozart first staged Don Giovanni, 3 minutes walk from the old town square, it was hard to pass up. I have never enjoyed a performance more- if there were no superstars still the singing was excellent, the acting was marvelous, and the staging was well done. Not incidental, I booked a box seat as... More

One of the Estates Theatre’s many claims to glory is its strong link with Mozart, who conducted the world premiere of his opera Don Giovanni in October 1787, and I was lucky to see the performance of the same opera after 228 years, I advise all the people who love opera to have an evening at the Stavovske Divadlo

Since the poster for the opera specifically mentioned "Air Conditioned," we weren't prepared for the 88 degree temperature of the upper balcony. And while we got the least expensive tickets (which were still not cheap), we were shocked to discover that they were the absolutely worst seats in the theater. Check out Seats 1 and 2 in Row 1 of... Bad seats did not interfere with our supreme liking of the opera. Actors were brilliant and orchestra was just perfect. We did not have the best of seats so advise doing some research on the seats before taking the tickets. The theatre itself was small but beautifully adorned. Total duration of ~3 hours (including 15-20 mins break).

A trip to Prague isn't true without a trip to the Opera. If you can catch Don Guivonnia you should as it had its original premier here.

Staying in Stare Mesto (Old Town)

Neighborhood Profile
Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighborhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.
