We have just returned from our holiday in Stanhope. On Wednesday we visited Hexham and visited The Old Gaol. It was well worth the visit and very reasonably priced too!! A must see when visiting Hexham.

We called hours before for a booking and they gladly opened the tour specially for us that night with little time to prepare. It was surreal, my group of friends and I enjoyed ourselves a lot learning about the history and all the effort of our two guides. Definitely worth going!

My husband and I went on a night tour of the gaol and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! We were impressed by our two guides John and Joy's knowledge and just how much effort they put in to make it an experience to remember (especially loved the costume and character changes throughout the night!). Although we didn't experience any "ghostly" encounters, we... More

Great history precinct with many attractions. The building with the shop also has an upstairs display. 4 locations very close together, well worth a visit.

The Old Gaol and Museum are shown well, with interesting exhibits and anecdotes to portray the events which took place while this building operated in that way. It warrants at least an hour to cover in full.

I myself enjoy looking around prisons, but was not expecting too much from this gaol. I was pleasantly surprised. Once you start reading about deeming ( the most famous prisoner) you become engrossed & want to learn more. Great value for money as well.

We went and seen this for the first time last week, it was excellent, I didn't know there was that much to see, until I went in, then spent nearly 2 hours looking aroud, it was well set out and very informative. Well worth a visit.

Hello John & Joy! Thank you so much for the wonderful tour of The Old Gaol. It was a great experience while me & my partner were down in Albany for the weekend. We will definitely come by again! We came by the Brig Amity Ship as well on Sunday, it was great!

We loved our trip around the old goal and museum but I wasn't happy with the attendant who worked at the old goal, he's English was absolutely terrible, he was German and kept slipping back into he's native tongue! You couldn't hardly understand what he was talking about, they definitely need a local Ozzy to do that job. Apart from... More

The 'Old Gaol' has been rebuilt with care and understanding. There are many things to see and the history, limited as it is interesting. We went on the ghost walk one evening and this is really brought to life by a local historian who adds real atmosphere to the evening. The children who were there at the time were spellbound... More
