We went in early June and the place is closed. And it seems that it has been closed for a long time. :(

The place is well kept & the guide is friendly. Unfortunately, it is deeply regretted to note that the penguins have really dwindled during our visit. We are only able to view only ONE penguin during our entire night outing. Apparently the New Zealand sea lions have been making penguins as their staple food which resulted in their shrinking population.... More

The 'public story' of the seal lions and fur seals eating the penguins obscures the terrible truth that the penguins at Pennershaw at KI have largely been decimated by the massive expansion of the Sealink ferry terminal. There is a road to the ferry that goes straight through their breeding areas. They are either run over on the road or... More

We visited the centre on the first night of our stay only to discover that the penguin tours are closed until further notice due to the penguin numbers declining because of the New Zealand fur seals eating them! Bit disappointing.

We were told we wouldn't see any. Kingscote tours no longer run so we just went down the beach with an orange covered torch and found 2 burrows 3 penguins quite easily despite a nearby fur seal under the jetty where the penguins like to hide. They were on the beach to the south of jetty. Just follow the smell... More

Sadly, the Little Penguins are essentially gone and the tour is closed. The reason(s) are subject of hot debate locally. The operator of the tour has a notice in his window blaming predation from New Zealand fur seals. Others attribute it to over-fishging of pilchards (small fish the penguins and seals rely on) and other reasons. Who knows, and it's... More

I like Little Penguins. I really do. The trouble is, once you've been to Philip Island in Victoria, you a kind of spoiled for other rookeries that perhaps aren't the size of PI. We met our guide at the Penguin Centre down near Hogs Bay and walked over to the rookery near the ferry terminal. Our guide told us that... More

Unfortunately the Pennishaw Penguin Tour is unable to guarantee a penguin sighting. Whilst I understand that nothing is guaranteed in nature, the penguin numbers have been so depleted that there are currently none to be seen. It is believed that the seals have decimated the numbers as well as other sea life predators such as sharks. It was disappointing and... More

The guide spent a lot of time with the 4 of us and did his level best to help us see the little critters but they are elusive. We would not have seen a one without him but the admission is $13.
