Arrived at 8:30 and the museum was just about to open. As it was a rainy day what's better than an indoor activity? There's an art gallary to the left of the entrance and to the left the museum of 2 floors. Learnt a little about the mining history and life back in the old days. Top activity!

There really isn't much to do in Arrowtown and when we arrived after a 20min cab ride from Queenstown (about NZD$80), the cold didn't help and we kinda dived into the first warm attraction we could find. So that's how ended up in Lakes Distrit Museum & Art Gallery. The souvenir shop isn't much and the service staff probably has... More

...you should have come at the end of the day when we head downstairs to turn off the lights.... Seriously though, pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit. Arrowtown is such an outdoorsy town that on a cold snowy day like that the museum and a nice warm pub (preferably with the fire on) are the best options! Come back... More

Extremely well appointed little museum. Fascinating insight into the history of the region. An enjoyable way to spend an hour or two if you enjoy a more traditional museum. Well worth a visit

The only bad thing I have to say about the Musuem is that we rushed through it because we didn't have enough time (we were there for about 1.5 hours). I would allow this or more for new visitors. It doesn't look like much from the outside but this Museum has an outstanding amount of artifacts and written knowledge about... More

This is an excellent museum, I think rated as one of the best "small museums" in the country. Easy to get around and plenty of great displays for the younger and easily bored - plus some humorous bits too. For the more information inclined, a huge amount of information and things to look at. Highly recommended.

Four adults all found this museum very appealing and informative. The goldrush exhibits and remnants of the Chinese (miners) village were most interesting. The exhibits are well done and attractive, and among the best we saw in New Zealand.

We went with 3 kids; 10, 8 and 6. Not to long, lots to interest both adults snd children with interactive/touchable bits that it's relatively stress free for parents. Well laid out and ties in aspects of chineese village and other attractions of the area.

This place just keeps on going - what an unexpected treasure in Arrowtown. In what seems like an innocuous building on a corner, there is a staggering array of historical material of the entire area. It is easy to simply drift around the museum for several hours taking in the history. Our kids loved the variety of displays and the... More

Recently while on holiday in Arrowtown during Easter weekend I paid a visit to the local museum in Buckingham Street as I'm a museum buff and I wanted to see how much the museum had changed since I often visited it as a young boy growing up on Arrowtown in the late 1970s. I was surprised at the $8.00 admission... More

Thanks for your great review Andrew, it is always fantastic to hear that our visitors enjoyed the museum. Just a note on the admission fee - the Lakes District Museum is a non-profit Charitable Trust and as such we are not Council or government funded so we have to charge an admission fee to carry out our work. This includes... More

If you're in Arrowtown, the museum is a definite must. For only $8 it is larger than it looks and is great for learning about the history of Arrowtown in a clearly set out and interesting way. The downstairs area has what it would have been like in the past, and it does feel like you've stepped back in time.... More
