Situated on red metal soils in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, Abbey Cellars is a boutique 'single estate' Winery owned and operated by the Haworth family. Abbey Cellars wines have an exclusive focus on producing smaller volumes of hand-picked ultra premium quality wine. The winery itself is a spectacular sight. Architecturally designed, this winery is our unique interpretation of a Gothic abbey. Fat Monk is our craft beer brand.

This is set in a lovely location and the Abbey is beautiful. I loved the local dog running around the cellar. Wines were also nice but no soul to the service, no personal touch, no explanation, we were just given each glass, told "Chardonnay" or whatever the type was and nothing about the grapes or flavours. Very sad and unexpected... More

Easter weekend is the biggest of the season and the last. We have to rope in vineyard people and extra staff to serve hundreds of people. The other option is to provide no tastings this weekend and just glass sales like some places. But some people prefer the tasting option. Best to come in a quieter day for usual cellar... More

Arriving by coach we were welcomed, and the wines explained, and in which order we would taste, we were also given cheese and biscuits. We enjoyed the tastings and the cheese and biscuits, and purchased some to take home. This is a well presented new building for a cellar door, and would be suitable for wedding receptions or dinner parties.

We met the lady who runs the vineyard at a supermarket earlier on our holiday, so just had to call in. Glad we did. Amazingly she remembered us, and gave us a lovely tasting of all their wines. My husband mentioned that he makes beer, so we had a beer tasting as well! We were able to sit in the... More

We arrived 10 minutes before the advertised closing time and found the place deserted and all but shut down. No tasting was offered, the lights in the beer section had been switched off. We didn't feel very welcome at all. Shame. In the end I managed to buy a few bottles of beer but that's not the sort of visit... More

As with all on-licences in NZ, no alcohol can be served 15 minutes before closing. If there are no customers at this time, it's pretty much time to shut up shop. We can still sell alcohol for takeaway until closing however under off-licence. Cheers More

Abbey is a lovely place for a quiet wine or craft beer. Get a very nice platter, taste and choose a bottle of wine (or craft beer), and sit out in the sun or under a sunshade, and relax. The wines are good (despite what one reviewer said - we're red drinkers so can't say anything about the whites) -... More

We dropped by here whilst touring NZ and happy we did. Both the gentlemen we met were friendly and accommodating. The wine and beer are very good. My husband is a brewer and liscenced beer taster and he was pretty impressed with the beer.

Abbey Cellars was the first stop on our Tour. We were met by a very friendly team. The information regarding the winery was second to none and really interesting. What a lovely family business. The wines were superb and the descriptions given for each awesome. The beer at the end went down a treat for the men in our party.... More

I absolutely adore their rose wine called Passion (was Blushing Monk), the wine is excellent, they've now branched out into beers too. Always worth a visit!

Not much to say, great place, really lovely, young winery, excellent wines, people are great and have the wine passion... Just pop in and taste the result of their craftsmanship. I would have loved to taste the beets also but unfortunately I had to drive...
