As a group of photographers we decided to go and photograph the Sea birds This was an amazing experience I don't think any of us realised how big these birds are or how beautiful. We were so close we could almost touch them. We also were visited by the wee Hectors Dolphin which are protected and as an added bonus... More

Our boat was very empty, just the 4 of us, the captain was very friendly and talked about his history in the area, where he has traveled, the best places to eat and where, and this was all as we were pulling out of the marina. We saw a TON of albatross (3 kinds including the biggest), petrels, giant petrels,... More

I am an avid birdwatcher, so I quickly discovered this tour while planning our New Zealand trip. The boat tour took us to 2 spots out on the ocean, aways from shore, to look for seabirds. Gary stopped and put out a basket of food to attract the birds and in they came! I was srprised that I appeared to... More

For photographers, I recommend the 9am trip for the best lighting/visuals. My wife and I were lucky enough to have the whole tour to ourselves. Gary was very friendly and great at positioning the boat perfect for photos. He knows the birds well and everything ran smooth and perfect. We loved it. Birdwatchers CAN'T visit the South Island without doing... More

"Ok," I thought. "We'll cruise out to an island or shoreline and try to spot some birds flying around." YAWN! Wow, was I wrong. Our jet boat zoomed to several locations out to sea, cut the engines, and was immediately surrounded by sea birds of all types. Probably helped that our captain, Gary Melville, threw a mesh bag filled with... More

We really enjoyed this trip as we saw a large number of birds. The skipper knew the area very well and had a good understanding of the behaviour of the sea birds. A net of food was suspended from the boat which attracted birds and a shark. We also saw dolphins. Hot chocolate and ginger nut biscuits were offered as... More

This may seem a bit pricey to some, but if you like birds and are fascinated by albatrosses, you should consider doing this. And if you're a birder, this is a must.

We went on the 9 am trip with 5 others. Luckily for us the sea was pretty calm and the sun shining. The chance to get up close views of sea birds such as 3 species of albatross, giant petrel and smaller petrels and great views of Hutton's Shearwaters was unmissable. Bonus of spotted shags, fur seals, and a Mako... More

You might think this is just for bird enthusiasts. Loved the small boat trip out, and watching 40-50 birds of several different species including albatrosses, dolphins, shark, petrels, shags, shearwaters and seals. The birds are encouraged to come close to the boat by a large block of frozen fish trailed from the boat. Recommended.

My wife and i are touring South Island and stopped in Kiakoura for a few days. We decided to try the Albatross trip. We had been advised to take the early trip out so we reported to the office at 6am - or it may have been 6.30am. We were taken to the boat. On this trip there were only... More
