We went on this trip as a second choice as the whale watching boat was out of action. We loved it. Not much to add to the other reviews, we saw 4 types of albatross , many other seabirds , a pod of dolphins and a rock full of baby seals. Probably more interesting than the whales!

Did most of the activities in Kaikoura, but if you want to be arm's distance from an albatross, this is a definite must do activity. Birds spotted- Southern Royal, Wandering, Salvin's and Whitecapped albatross; giant and cape petrels; . Seasickness- Maybe a problem, but we had taken tablets(we had other activities planned too which definitely required them) which worked perfectly.... More

A really calm day was a bonus and made for easier photography. An excellent and knowledgable skipper helped make it a wonderful morning - the stars were of course the birds - plus a blue shark, dusky dolphins and seals. Embarking and disembarking the boat is on dry land so really safe and easy even if you're a bit unsteady... More

Most birders or nature lover may already know about this, but if you don't and you have any interest in seeing albatross and other pelagic bird species from the Southern Hemisphere, these are the folks to go with. Their jet boats get you out to the shelf within about thirty minutes (don't worry if they zoom past birds on the... More

There is not much to add to the other positive reviews. We agree. We went on the early morning trip and, as it was November and had snowed on the tops the previous day, we had fantastic light and views due to getting up so early. The light was still wonderful for photos while on the boat so we have... More

I suspect this tour ends up being a second choice for a lot of people after the more glamorous whales and dolphins, but it was definitely one of the best trips we did. Small boat/group, knowlegeable guide, opportunity to see numerous seabirds really close up. Whe else are you ever going to see four species of albatross from a distance... More

The organisation of the trip at the visitor centre was excellent and our email booking was dealt with very efficiently by Karra. Skipper Gary explained the programme and once we started seeing the birds he pointed the different species out to us, it was amazing to see such large birds so close to the boat! We were given a list... More

Wonderful to be so close to such amazing birds and so many as well as the beautiful albatross. Went out in what was called "challenging conditions" at 6am and no one was unwell - but guess if you are not used to the ocean maybe its not for you. It was amazing......

Myself, a friend and my daughter went on this Encounter this weekend. We opted to get up early and do the 6am tour. Our guide took us in a van from checkin to South Bay and was also our guide on the boat. There was only us plus one more traveller so was fantastic little group. We stopped three times... More
