While you are in New Zealand head for Kaikoura and go whale watching....by aeroplane! It's the best way to view whales, dolphins and mountains while in New ZealandIn a typical 30 minute flight you will see the majestic Sperm Whale preparing for his next dive and up to 500 Dusky Dolphins playfully swimming. Occasional sightings include Southern Right, Humpback, Fin, Sei, Brydes, Pilot, Southern Bottlenose and Blue Whales. Other, less frequent, visitors to the area include Common, Hectors, Risso's and Southern Right Whale Dolphins, and Orca.

It sounds obvious but seeing Kaikoura's sperm whales from above gives you a very different perspective from seeing them from the boat. The boat guide paints a very vivid picture of the size of a male whale but tail floukes apart you don't really see a very big percentage of it sticking out of the water. From above you can... More

We just today had a 30 minutes whale watch flight. They're very knowledgeable, know when and where the whale will be seen. So we had been the first before the boats and the helicopter arrived. The pilot did a very good job - saw much more than with the much more expensive helicopter tour 5 years ago. In addition you're... More

Book with confidence, these guys are real professionals. It is a nature experience, so they can't guarantee you will see whales, so keep that knowledge in mind. It's a big ocean and weather can play a role. I would recommend them if you are in the area.

The advertisement for this quotes a 95% chance of seeing a sperm whale and many other species of cetaceans, etc. We booked for the time of year most likely to see these and were a bit surprised on arriving at the airport, to hear the pilot speak about the likelihood of seeing a whale (note the singular) - if he... Our children bought us this flight for whale watching for a Christmas present. The first day I booked unfortunately the weather was too gusty for the plane to take off safely so we returned the next day and were rewarded with the sight of a magnificent huge whale. Regrettably we were unable to spot any dolphins or other sea life... More

We got switch to a flight to see whales since the sea was too rough and our cruise was cancelled and it was quite amazing. Our pilot found a single sperm whale and circled around him from above in both directions so that everyone on the plane got a chance to look straight down on him. It was amazing. On... More

Absolutely recommend doing this if you end up on the South Island! A very informative pre-flight info sesh coupled with knowledgeable and personable pilots makes for a very enjoyable experience. Pilots flew over the whales several times to make sure we got our money's worth.

Excellent alternative to the long and bumpy boat cruises to see the whales. All passengers get window seats and the pilot cruises around the whales once they have been spotted. We were lucky that our pilot Anthony spotted two whales. Quite amazing!

Seeing 3 massive whales, amazing views, coupled with the pilots enthusiasm in giving us the best possible experience, it was brilliant. With a pre flight information session explaining the geographical, biological and historical significance of the coastline, it really made me appreciate what i was about to see. Amazing!

Was flown out with two other mates and got to see three big whales!! The insight and knowledge from the pilot was brilliant and the being able to see the backdrop of the mountains from the sky topped it off!! Definitely recommend to anyone going through Kaikoura!!!
