Good selection

There are lots of pieces to choose from and information about the different types of jade. You also get the opportunity to watch craftsmen at work.

I had the chance to talk to one member of the staff, who kindly told me that most of the jade is imported from Canada, worked in China and sold in NZ. (Apparently she was not supposed to say that to the tourists) The shop have also an agreement with Bus tours, which get a percentage of the sales. Walk... More

New Zealand green stone is found in souvenir stores everywhere. Coming across Mountain Jade gave us an insight into how all those green stone momentos are carved. There is the opportunity to learn about the history, information and manufacture of the Jade ornaments and jewellery. Worth a visit.

I thoroughly enjoyed stopping in here. The ladies at the counter were very nice and up for a chat. There was an open workshop where you could view artists carving stones. Only thing to note is that it's not all NZ jade they sell, so check (it's usually labeled if it's NZ stone), but the ladies at the counter happily... More

We visited this wonderful shop that both sells carved greenstone (jade) and offers a free tour of the shop and workrooms. This includes a description of the various types of greenstone, with examples and a tour of the workrooms where some of the carving is done. You will be amazed at how a domestic sewing machine is used to polish... More

The one thing, the one most important thing to Shah, is customer service. Well, the store looked very inviting and certainly upscale. The town of Hokitika is renowned for its local jade, which can be collected only by the Maori and when handcrafted by them, makes for a very nice gift. So, Shah stopped in this store to pick up... So there is the main store that is big but not very welcoming but if you go down a few street and turn left you will see a smaller store which is also Mountain Jade. That is the one to go into. The Jade pieces are presented in groups so you have the Spiral section, Fish Hook etc. The lady... More

We were en route to Greymouth from Fox Glacier. After visiting the Information Centre, we spotted Mountain Jade nearby and so we stepped in for a browse. It is rather spacious and with a variety of greenstone ornamental exhibits. There is a workshop allowing customers to see how the beautiful ornaments are made from stones. However, nobody was at work... More
