We took a trip to the lake and gorge and loved them both, but for different reasons. The Gorge was tranquil with cloudy turquoise colored water, something we had not experienced before while the lake had crystal clear water typical of so many NZ lakes. The visit to the gorge was definitely the highlight of our trip down the west... More

Some of the reviews of the lake seem to show Hokitika Gorge. The places are separate. This area is just as good - a stunningly beautiful lake with mountains in the background. Directions: Leave Hokitika on Stafford street, which becomes Kaniere Road. After about 10km there is a junction, The Gorge is to the right, and the lake is indicated... More

Lovely spot to glamp, with the Kaniere R rolling and rushing at our front door, sand flies were a bit snappy.

Really nice and relaxing lake and pretty walk down to the old gold mine site. Lots of people enjoying boating on the lake when we were there, nice for a swim on a hot day.

Lovely lake, with a jetty. Our boys enjoyed swimming and jumping off it for a quick dip. Our only suggestions is to upgrade the children's play area. As parents of young children, it would have been nice to have something out of the water to do.

Planned to camp for two nights but left after only one as the neighbours were yelling and screaming until 3.30am and letting off fireworks. They were locals who lived in town and had taken over the area before any tourists arrived. There were unoccupied tents set up obviously for locals coming camping after Xmas despite the warnings on the DOC... More

Good strenuous hike. We only walked to first lookout. Beautiful view mostly through rainforest. Think the walk is 4 hours one way

Well, then it's even better. You can paddle around the lake. If lucky it is flat calm and it feels like paddling on a mirror. Lovely views. The sandflies can be really anoying. Campsite close to the shore.

A beautiful lake surrounded by native bush with big stands of Rimu trees. Great easy bush walks and if wanted harder tracks to follow.
