This place is worth the drive. There will be other people there as it is advertised and sign posted. However being in NZ it is not crowded even at the height of the season and is another of those wonderful clean unlittered places to be in, that you expect in this marvellous country. Just breathtaking although it does make you... More

My husband and I drove to Lake Kaniere from Hokitika Gorge. We were looking for Dorothy Falls, and it was a lot further than we thought it would be! As it was getting dark and raining, we were considering turning around but glad we didn't. As soon as I opened the car door, a kiwi emerged from the brush and... More

We were headed for the Hokitika Gorge and decided to take the scenic route round Lake Kaniere. We stopped at the head of the lake to take some photo's and were the only ones there. The lake was like glass and it was very tranquil. The road became a gravel one and we followed the contours of the lake through... More

We visited to pass an afternoon in Hokitika. Sand flies were a torture as usual. However the views were wonderful! My partner took a dip and said it was warmer than expected!

Nice trip into the lake. A good spot for a long weekend with the boat. Nice scenery and clear blue water.

We took a trip to the lake and gorge and loved them both, but for different reasons. The Gorge was tranquil with cloudy turquoise colored water, something we had not experienced before while the lake had crystal clear water typical of so many NZ lakes. The visit to the gorge was definitely the highlight of our trip down the west... More

Some of the reviews of the lake seem to show Hokitika Gorge. The places are separate. This area is just as good - a stunningly beautiful lake with mountains in the background. Directions: Leave Hokitika on Stafford street, which becomes Kaniere Road. After about 10km there is a junction, The Gorge is to the right, and the lake is indicated... More

Lovely spot to glamp, with the Kaniere R rolling and rushing at our front door, sand flies were a bit snappy.

Really nice and relaxing lake and pretty walk down to the old gold mine site. Lots of people enjoying boating on the lake when we were there, nice for a swim on a hot day.

Lovely lake, with a jetty. Our boys enjoyed swimming and jumping off it for a quick dip. Our only suggestions is to upgrade the children's play area. As parents of young children, it would have been nice to have something out of the water to do.
