This is a must see if you are in the area. The walk from the parking lot is not strenuous, and the reward of experiencing the glacial blue waters is something not to miss. Beautifully serene!

In December 2013, I took 2 friends for a trip up the Waimakiriri Gorge & over the Alps to Hokitika. It was the best trip I have ever had. Mark Read, our pilot was able to show us Pigs in the bush, lakes & huts & gave us an excellent commentary on all that we saw on our return trip-which... More

Beautiful views and a very nice, short stroll with a suspension bridge. Although, it was a little overcast we still enjoyed our visit to the Gorge. The water was beautiful as well as the surrounding landscape. The walk to the water is short, but It is a good 30 minute drive off the beaten track to get there. To spend... More

The view and the walk around this was spectacular. The water an amazing blue. After this we would have liked to relax with a cuppa or cold drink and be able to use the toilets in comfort. Neither of these were possible. There was absolutely NOWHERE to get any sort of refreshment and the toilet facilities were reminiscent of 40... More

Absolutely stunning piece of New Zealand Landscape. Great walking tracks and neat suspension bridges. Take some insect repellent to enjoy spending some time just skimming stones with the kids and enjoying the birds in the trees.

This place is beautiful and definitely worth the drive. It's about 30min drive out of town. It was a gorgeous sunny day. We walked down to the water and climbed over the rocks getting some great photos!

A beautiful area of forest and blue blue water. A swing bridge crosses the gorge and is worth walking further along the gorge to get shots like the one above.

We went to Hokitika gorge in the summer + we revisited some photographs recently, reminding me of our trip. Firstly, I remember BLUE, the bluest blue I think I've ever seen! My hubby is often asked if he photo shopped the colour into our holiday snaps! Secondly, I remember SANDFLIES! Take repellent!

Apart from being a lovely bush walk, and seeing native pigeons in the trees, what was astounding was the colour of the water. When you see photos, you can't believe that that is the actual colour. The walk there and over the swing bridge is an easy walk for most people.
