We made the trek out of Hokitika to the Gorge (33kms) pleasant drive, careful of the sharp bends. Unfortunately due to heavy rainfall the previous night we missed seeing the blue colour and it was more like the glacier milk colour. Still we saw a type of fungus/mushroom we'd not seen elsewhere in our travels in NZ.

Easy walk and well prepared track and platforms for young family - all thoroughly enjoyed it. Take sand-fly repellent.

We didn't know about this place, but we're told not to miss it by the check out lady in the town's supermarket. It's about 30 km out of town towards the ranges, but a good road except for the last km. All I can say is to repeat the advice of the check out lady. It's a shortish walk on... More

Unfortunately we weren't able to see the blue waters as the rain had turned it into a jerky grey Colour. Nice little walk and spot though, great access to the water. Shame we didn't get to see the blue.

Everything in NZ is expensive in general, at least when compared to USA and the national parks there. This gorge we visited was again a very short drive from the town of Hokitika. The drive was amazing. The gorge and the hike were very pleasant. The water was turquoise and shades of blue that I can't possibly name. The swing... More

A short walk, perfect for a family with young children or those who are less mobile, and the views are lovely. Loads of Waka around the trail, but make sure you take measures against the very hungry midges!

A short hike to get to the Gorge but it was worth it. Stunning! Be sure to wear bug spray as there are loads of biting insects.

We arrived in Hokitika late afternoon and headed to the gorge whilst it was still sunny. The gorge really is the delightful sight - when we were there it was an opaque pale turquoise/duck egg rather than bright turquoise - perhaps depends on the recent rainfall? It's worth the walk across the bridges to the platform and boulders. Beware the... More
