Not too far out of town on a road that involves a lot of left-and-right turning is Hokitika Gorge. And yet again the water that you encounter takes on an impossibly vivid turquoise colour. It’s a short walk from the carpark through beautiful forest on gravel paths, boardwalks and to a swing bridge over the Hokitika River.

Great little walk from the car park to the gorge. But the sand-flies might spoil your picnic. Be prepared!

Lovely walk. Insanely gorgeous view. Make sure you come prepared to jump in for a very refreshing dip! Its bloody freezing so please look for my testicles. :)

Firstly, completely cover yourself or bath in insect repellent. There are billions of midges and Mosquitos and they bite like crazy. Once that's sorted... Incredible. It's free, easy parking, nice paths and well maintained. The views and water is just fantastic, it is so surreal and beautiful. I was thinking about taking a dip, not sure if you're allowed, but... A half hour drive and you are in paradise. The water is stunning. You do need to protect yourself from the sand flies though. A photographers dream. You have to go see it.There is a swing bridge over the water to make it more exciting for the kids!

Our friends back home thought we had photoshopped our pictures of this amazing river. But it really is that colour. I can only repeat what others have already said. Good number of parking spaces, well-maintained path and great views. Insect repellant is a must.

This attraction is quite some distance from the town of Hokitika, but well worth the visit. The track was well maintained and on occasion you were afforded a view of the gorge with the walkway strung over it. From this vantage point you realise how wide and how tranquil the gorge really is. When you get to the base of... More

We had an extremely wet visit to Hokitika Gorge. We got drenched but the visit was still well worth the effort as beautiful turquoise water looks amazing in the rain too. A bit of a drive out of town, but roads are all ok. Stop at the Kowhitirangi memorial to read the story too (not far from town).

Definitely worth a visit. There are a lot of beautiful lakes, gorges and rivers in NZ all with glacial water, but this tucked away gorge is breathtaking!

We couldn't believe the color of the water..a tranquil, turquoise color best viewed from the swinging bridge. This was probably in the top 3 spots we visited on our South Island trip
