Beautiful gorge, short easy walk with beautiful turquoise water. Although there were loads and loads of sandflies, so good idea to dip yourself in some insect repellent before you head to the track.

We visited Hokitika Gorge after days of rain, so there was ample water flowing through, and the color signified that it was glacier-fed. I walked to the overlook, while my family walked to the swing bridge, so I got great photos of them crossing it. There was much active bird life, and the flora was lovely. Trails are easy to... We really enjoyed the colors that are so intense, you might think someone drops dye into the water. Easy short walk, but insect repellent is a must! We thought we would chance it, but after about 40 feet of walking, went scampering back to the car for repellent. By then, some sand flies came on into the car with us... More

An absolute must when in Hokitika. It's 30 minutes from town...an easy scenic drive. NZ has lots of blue and turquoise lakes but this is ridiculous! It's like someone put blue vegetable dye in the water. As others have said.....use sandfly repellant so you don't spoil your trip.

It's a lovely walk, and the water is an amazing blue. The last part by the water is absolutely swarming with sand flies, though.

Stunning water and beautiful location in the hills. Easy walk and fun to have the swingbridge to cross. Beware of the gazillions of sandflies - Go well prepared for battle!

Well worth the drive through the valley to see this place. If you go via Lake Kaniere from Hokitika you can make this a half day trip. The journey there is really interesting - make sure you stop at the memorial at Kowhitirangi. The walk to the gorge is easy and beautiful in all weathers. Take an umbrella if it's... More

A fairly lengthy trip into the gorge, but once there was impressed with the area & of the colour of the water.

Easy and pretty walk with a good reward of amazing blue water at the end. Sandflies are hungry either keep moving or take repellent. From Hokitika allow 1.5 hours round trip minimum (driving and walking) and you should be right.
