The gorge is 33km from Hokitika town. It is a fast drive with almost no traffic. We went late in the day and there were only a few other people there. It was a nice, easy walk on a path through forest to a suspension bridge. The water in the gorge was stunning glacial blue and we took some good... More

This place is stunning. I've only marked it down because of the sandflies. 1 week later and we're still scratching from where we got bitten whilst putting on insect repellent in the carpark! Perhaps one needs to put it on before you leave your hotel or in your car. Thee are 3 different sections of the walk. The first is... More

This is one place that isn't advertised enough. It is well worth the trip from Hokitika through farm land and passing by the place where people died due to a shooting. Worth the stop to read the names and look through the hole. The gorge itself is a lovely deep blue. If you like swing bridges then a great one... More

The water really is as blue as the photographs suggest. It's well signposted from Hokitika town and well worth the detour before you head off to your next stopover.

The views at Hokitika Gorge were beautiful with stunning aqua blue water and a swinging bridge that provided a good viewing platform. Nice short walk around the gorge area. Just watch out for sandflies.

The Hokitika Gorge was highly recommended in Lonely Planet and Frenzy. Both accurate. It is an amazing place – the river color was as described and is a turquoise-blue even on the cloudy day that we had. The swing bridge is fun. It is well worth the scramble down to the rocks to the river bank and getting a water-level... More

We found this amazing place in the brilliant NZ Frenzy South Island guide book and were so glad that we followed the advice to visit it. This place really does look as stunning in real life as any photos of it suggest. The turquoise-blue water colour is amazing and the swing-bridge over the gorge simply adds to the overall beauty...
