En route around South Island, we wanted to stop in Hokitika, see if we can buy pounamu gifts for our friends back home. We soon discovered majority of jade pieces in the shops along the main street were imported from either British Columbia, or China. These non-native tiny pieces of stone, that a pre-schooler could have shaped, were expensive, but... More

Most of the reviews of Bonz 'N Stonz seem to related to the storefront - this review, however, is about the experience my wife and I had making jade pieces on our own in shop behind the store. Overall this was a great experience. There is no way we could have done this on our own, and with the guidance... More

This is a place with many different and interesting things to see. The prices are extraordinarily high, probably due to the asian buyers coming through the doors in tourist buses. You can carve your own piece, the bone already carved beautiful but not worth the prices involved. The minute i saw jade from China to buy, in competition with local... More

We had searched quite awhile and didn't see many natural stones around. We walked in to this unpretentious Artist Studio, met Steve and was impressed with his skill and his manner. Only disappointment was finding him so late and not being able to take a carving class. Next time for sure. We bought 5 and also had the best pricing... More

In a single afternoon at Hokitika we visited many shops hoping to have some greenstone shaped in a very simple design and shipped overseas. One artist didn't try to hide his contempt, while other salespeople simply quoted a ridiculous price and left it at that. Feeling disheartened, we arrived at Bonz 'N Stonz at around closing time. Three friendly staff... More

I was very disappointed at visiting this shop. Even a small piece of stone costs more than 100 bulks. Everything in this shop is ridiculously expensive. When I asked the old guy in this shop why the price is so high, he was very rude to me and also ask me to leave his shop!

Something for everyone - whether you want to shop for jade designed by one of the onsite carvers or have a go at carving yourself. $5 stone polishing for those on a budget who want a rainy day activity. Just go to the beach and pick some that you think may turn out well!

I've been to see Steve to do carving three times now during my year in NZ and each experience was different but very enjoyable. Steve and Dan are friendly and helpful, taking you through the whole process. Steve charges reasonably for the finished piece but when put together with the time and help given it's definitely value for money. This... More

Although I'm absolutely not creative and have only very limited skills when it comes to craftwork I decided to create a special birthday present for my best friend and I really enjoyed my time at Bonz 'n' Stonz. You don't pay much more than for an "impersonal" pendant and are rewarded with a memory that might not be perfect but... More
