Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a subtropical oasis created by volunteers in the remnants of a former quarry in Northland, New Zealand. The Gardens are open to the public and feature subtropical gardens, native forest walks, waterfalls, streams, quarry ruins, tunnels, a scented Camellia collection, a plethora of NZ native and exotic plant species and so much more... The Gardens are a work in progress and have been created through the blood, sweat, tears and laughter of volunteers, supporting companies and other interest groups. Entry is by GOLD-COIN DONATION, with all proceeds used to purchase plants and equipment. Thanks!

Signposting to these gardens could be better, quite an effort to find them, but well worth it. New reception/coffee shop being builts (but believe this has been ongoing for some time). Lots of different walks through the gardens, some quite steep.

Visited here not knowing what it would be like but could not have asked for more. Strolled around all the areas including up to the lake and although possible not the best time of the year to visit still plenty to see. Enjoyed a picnic lunch with the most wonderful perfumes from all the plants.

What a fabulous place the Subtropical Quarry Gardens is. I imagined a few succulents and some palm trees. What I saw was fabulous displays of the most amazing plants I have ever seen. I felt like I had fallen down the rabbit hole! Yes there were succulents - massive ones with flowers towering over my head. There were bromeliads in... More

The gardens improve every time we visit. We have visited over the last 6 years and it is amazing the amount of work that has been done.

Noticed they are building a visitor centre as we walked in which will make the place even better. Lots of little walks , bridges and gardens. Highlights were the lake and tunnels, also has a great picnic area.

Amazing and all done by volunteers! To turn something ugly and an eyesore into a beautiful garden is a credit to some enthusiastic visionaries. Be lovely when the visitor centre is completed.

This garden is relatively easy to get around and has many viewing spots of the pond, waterfalls and various gardens incorporated among the former quarry buildings and workings. The plants are well established. Take the past to the arid garden to also see the view. Brochures are available in the visitor box and as this is a volunteer created and... More

We spent about one and a half hours here. The quarry has been transformed (mainly with volunteer assistance) into an oasis of varying plants, trees and water areas. This includes a waterfall at the top that feeds into a small lake. Such beauty, in town, and worth the walk. Go early on a warm day.

Kia ora and thank you for your positive review! We are always happy to receive visitors from overseas; we get to showcase the hard-work and botanical variety that makes Northland such a wonderful place to be. Good advice on arriving early on hot days...it gets VERY warm in our sheltered valley! Bon voyage -WQG Crew More
