i am used to backpacking and organising my own food when hiking. it was fun to use a package deal. claire was courteous and well-organised in her emails, and her unobtrusive catering for us during our stay in her purpose-built beach house - dropping the meals off, dropping us off to the day walks, giving advice about alternative routes to... Fantastic experience to walk to the top of this New Zealand icon. Views to take the breath away. DOC have done a superb job putting steps in much of the steep climbs.

Steep at the beginning with so many welcome steps formed by the DOC, but some great views make the effort worthwhile. Shame there was only time to return by the rather less worthy road route!

The track can be a tricky one at times if you are going to be doing a little exploring as well.. Good trails to follow. Good tracks and a good hike to get your muscles moving. and even if you want to, have a swim at Ocean Beach when you finish. Great bush, views and scenery. Bring water and a... More

This walk is a perfect way to spend several hours, it recommends that from smugglers cove to ocean beach, via Mt Lion and Bream Head that the walk will talk 5hr 10. We managed it in 3hrs 14 but I'm not sure everyone enjoyed the pace. The steps are relentless in places and I guess if it was really wet... More

Views that astound, bush and birds, steep but take it easy and take in the spectacular scenery. Jump in the sea once back on the beach. Highly recommend this adventure

The Smugglers Cove Coastal walk is spectacular and a must for all visitors. The pretty drive from Whangarei to Urquarts Bay takes about 40 mins and is also a beautiful drive. The parking area is at the end of the Urquarts Bay Road and the walk is a loop taking in beautiful views of the harbour and passing a white... More

The whole experience was wonderful! The food delicious, wonderfully presented, with clear instructions as to how to heat etc. The purpose built lodge very comfortable and easily accommodated the ten of us in relative luxury. The linen we hired was of excellent quality. The first night we went Kiwi listening in beautiful bush adjacent to the lodge. Great fun. Claire... More

These tracks are hard work if you venture on to the ridge and walk the length of the heads, but there are easy options to the south including a lovely walk to Smugglers Cove, which is nice for a swim. The drive out from Whangarei is great.
