Whangarei Heads is a great place to explore with good walks around Bream Heads & Mt Aubrey. Mt Manaia climb is a must. Snorkelling try Smugglers cove- its cleaner than the marine reserves in the harbour.

The scenery in this area is beautiful along the coast. Summertime is the best time so that you can venture out, and walk along the beaches. The coastal drive is very comfortable with good roads.

The waterfall and adjacent park are a good place to stop. The location is also a popular spot for the local people to climb the trees above the water fall and jump into the river (not over the falls!). This was actually a bit of a spectacle!

Make sure you go via the ocean and return via the hills which are magnificent. Walk to the gun emplacement which is interesting and a nice short walk with lovely sea views.

The 24km drive took 45 min each way from the main town but the drive to Pataua was worth it. Bridge was at the end of a peninsula and the kids spent hours jumping off it into the water. Drive had beautiful scenery but it took longer than expected.

What stunning scenery every day, lots of walking and sights to see and just simply wake up in Hobbit country!!! Visit the Kiwi centre and see a live Kiwi and see an old colonial home. Walk to the falls, spectacular and so much more.

Whangarei heads is such a lovely spot. There are beautiful beaches all the way along ending up at the wonderful Ocean's Beach- great beach to play in the surf and slide down the dunes on body boards. There are some lovely walks around there too -walking from Urquart's Bay to Smuggler's Bay is a beautiful walk. You can continue the... More
