The Whangarei Heads peninsula is becoming the playground and place to holiday. The 6000 hectare peninsula is a water and nature lover's paradise and a great place to stay on your Northland holiday or weekend break away. The peninsula is ringed with numerous sheltered harbour bays and coves on one side, and expansive white sandy ocean beaches on the other. The waters of Parua Bay, McLeod's, Taurkura, Reotahi and Urquhart's Bays provide numerous family friendly swimming and picnicking spots. On its pacific coastal side the magnificent 5km long Ocean Beach and to the North the popular Taiharuru and Pataua estuaries. Between these coastal fringes lie towering 20 million year old volcanic peaks, "the backbone" of Whangarei Heads with Mt Mania and Mt Lion rising steeply from the sea to over 400 metres. These mountains are surrounded by rich native bush and are abundant with wildlife including noted populations of North Island Brown kiwi.

well worth the drive

Great little peninsular, bays, volcanic outcrops, ocean, surf, beach. You name it, you can do it here. Easy journey, only one way in and out and delightful both ways

Drove around the heads - fantastic. Stayed for dinner in a hotel at Parua Bay - excellent sitting on the beach front sipping a beer. Families there too. Walked from a bay over to Smugglers Bay -excellent 20 minute walk each way. A must to go to Ocean Beach and stop at some of the other bays to swim. Well... More

Long way to drive to see the beach. Had to walk to see the heads which was not possible because of the weather. Not many amenities along the way.

Smugglers bay - the most beautiful located bay which I have ever seen, you need to walk uphill and downhill then you will reach smugglers bay.

Follow the road to the end! There is a lovely beach with rocks to scramble on, good surf and a patrol. Parking is very limited. Allow 30 minutes for the journey from Whangarei and enjoy the scenery.

Whangarei Heads is a 36km drive from Whangarei and it's one of the most beautiful scenic drives around the bay that we've ever done. The views from The cafe in Mcloud Bay are magnificent and impressive. This place is well worth a visit.

Head off down the Whangarei Heads Rd that takes you down the Eastern side of the Whangarei Harbour and right out to the headland. This will take you past some lovely inner harbour beaches where you can park and take a stroll, if you can pick an in coming tide even better. Twenty minutes and you will be in Parua... More

Wonderful sailing area. Fantastic walks from flat walking areas to tracks up Mt. Manaia and Mt. Aubrey. An area for a snack, lunch or dinner on some evenings is The Deck. The Deck also do takeaway meals. There is a new place to stay in The Heads named the Fish & Jandal which has a beautiful outlook over McLeod Bay.... More
