Something for everyone.

Sheltered harbour beaches, safe swimming and boating. Small friendly communities, with great cafes, restaurants and a nice smattering of art galleries.

Had a wonderful day wandering around the Heads, views, wildlife and a bit of history. Also found "Ocean Beach", a surfing beach with the locals surfing on beautiful curling waves. Colours have to be seen! One of the prettiest places on the North Island that we have been to.

We'd like to keep this place private so we can enjoy it alone but ... the worldis your Oyster and go explore ! Fantastic hills and vistas are to be found a moment away from your motel or B&B ... great folks and healthy outdoor living in swimming , climbing , sailing and fishing abound ...

we really enjoyed the drive out to Whangarei Heads, spectacular viewing over the water. Interesting to see the oil refinery, it kind of spoils the view a bit, but no doubt is a necessity.

While doing the tourist thing driving around Whangerei we decided to drive out to Whangarei Heads. After doing many kilometres and passing through some very picturesque areas and some small villages we reached the Heads. Was it worth going there, I am not sure. Anyway we have been there now. Would I do it again, probably not.

The Whangarei Heads covers quite a large area, but generally refers to the headlands and bays on the north-east side of the Whangarei Harbour and the northern side of the Whangarei Harbour entrance. The Whangarei Heads is a great place from early summer until the end of March. If you enjoy walking, tramping and water sports it is one of... More

My parents in law live here. Lucky me. It's a wild and wonderful place for long walks to secluded coves and great clean beach swims. Try to stay nearby for a few days and you can't go wrong. Walk up Mt Manaia too if you are fit.

Whangarei region has beautiful bays with lovely small inlets for boating, kyaking, and swimming. The scenery is beautiful and well worth a visit.
