Nothing too impressive to be honest. It does offer a good surf beach so will be good for a keen surfer. Was expecting a pretty scenic drive to the heads from the town centre but was left disappointed as the scenery along the way was pretty average and is not really worth the drive as compared to say a drive... Beautiful scenery approx at the last half way traveling from Whangarei city. A blue water bay on one side of the road and hilly mountains on the other side. Nearly the end of this road at Reotahi Bay, an unobstructed view in close distance you can see the huge NZ Oil Refinery Plant at the distance at Marsden Point, at... More

This is Whangarei at its best.Beautifull drive around the harbour to access the end of it Ocean beach.Probably the most attractive part of this wonderfull part of our country. The walk to mount Manaia is just plain superb. The reward is at the end with an exceptional view of Whangarei heads.Well worth going through it all and Ocean beach on its own... If sightseeing, hiking and climbing a lot of steps is your kind of thing, then the Whangarei Heads are for you. Took about 45 minutes to climb up. Bring water as you'll need it. Can be a little windy at the top. Nice views and a chance to see some birds in the forested area as well. You get to... More

Nice drive out from Whangarei. Stop at the Parua Bay pub for lunch - good food and service. Head out to Ocean Beach past Mt Manaia to the steep duned white sand beach. Good weekend drive for the day.

Whangarei Heads is a great place to explore with good walks around Bream Heads & Mt Aubrey. Mt Manaia climb is a must. Snorkelling try Smugglers cove- its cleaner than the marine reserves in the harbour.

The scenery in this area is beautiful along the coast. Summertime is the best time so that you can venture out, and walk along the beaches. The coastal drive is very comfortable with good roads.

The waterfall and adjacent park are a good place to stop. The location is also a popular spot for the local people to climb the trees above the water fall and jump into the river (not over the falls!). This was actually a bit of a spectacle!
