Early twentieth century travel to the central North Island relied on a fleet of nifty paddle steamers. Only one, PS Waimarie, survives, making a two-hour return voyage upstream most days. Peter Hardy, manager of the River Boat Centre accompanies each voyage. Dressed for the part, he brilliantly acts the role of flamboyant river boat pioneer Alexander Hatrick. He also releases... Went on the PS Waimarie for a two hour trip up the river. Recent rains made the river run with a lot of logs etc coming down but no real problem. The trip up was very good ( we were on the port side the whole way) and a gentleman in the appropriate clothing for the era gave us a... More

If you have a couple of hours to spare in Wanganui then this nostalgic trip down the river is a great way to spend them. The guys running the boat are very friendly and if you give the stokers a hand to shovel some coal you'll get an honorary stokers certificate. (Yes I have one!)

We took our 11 year old and 2 year old on this trip and they both really enjoyed it. Our 11 year old had a turn at shovelling the coal into the burner and was most proud of her certificate she received. Our 2 year old was most impressed with the noises and the animals we spotted on the banks... More

The 2 hour cruise on the riverboat is a great middle of the day time on the river. Lots of photo opportunities and the boat crew, food and experience is great value Easy to fit this in with visit to Drury Hill and Sargeant Gallery if you are time limited

To take a journey on the PS Waimarie is to return for a short time to the heyday of Victorian paddle steamers. The Waimarie is a fully restored vessel that will take you on a sedate two hour voyage to Upokongaro and back again. A "resurrected" Alexander Hatrick, dressed in period costume provides you with a commentary on the history... More

We were so glad that we chose to spend a couple of hours chugging up the Wanganui River. A real trip back in time. Very informative talk from the captain, who wore period clothing. Was able to see the boiler being stoked up. A one off experience. Recommended!

An enjoyable couple of hours steaming up and down the Wanganui River on the PS Waimarie hearing about all the history of the river highway, long before rail.

I booked for a large family group ranging in age from 8 to 72. We had a very memorable trip starting with the museum which provided lots of interesting background information which helped set the scene for the trip itself. We found the staff lovely and very helpful, a great commentary was provided when we set off. However it was... More

Thoroughly enjoyed our riverboat trip. Was interesting trying to imagine the journey the early settlers must have made to even get this far and then to journey up the mighty Whanganui River on one of these fabulous old steam boats. Take time to go into the museum before or after your trip. You can learn the history, both of the... More
