Undoubtedly the most authentic way to experience Whanganui River’s scenery and history. Regular cruises aboard the iconic Waimarie Paddle Steamer - NZ’s only coal-fired paddle steamer operating from the golden riverboat era - are available during warmer months (October-April) and private charter cruises can be made by arrangement anytime. View cruise entertainment, timetable, prices and purchase tickets online or at the Waimarie Centre, where you can also uncover river memorabilia at the Waimarie Museum and marvel at a 134-year old architecturally designed building.

A good outing for a lazy morning

We wanted to see the river and had grown weary of sitting in the car. This was a great trip by boat for 2 hours.. Recommended.

Really loved the trip. Had a ball, and great company. Highlight was the great hospitality and Entertainment. Crew was very obliging and the young guy (crew) with the card tricks was amazing. The best two hours I've spent in a long time. Recommend this trip as a must do. Infact any trip on the Paddle Steamer Waimarie is a great... More

Informative 2 hour cruise up the river on the only paddle steamer in New Zealand, museum is full of history aswell as the trip on the steam ship itself. Light refreshments available onboard, I recommend a scone with jam and cream to go with a cup of tea!

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, however the "RESTAURANT" was VERY disappointing. The food was inedible and a SHOCKing experience. Not what I expected at all. The lettuce on the bread was DARK GREEN and looked as if it was DAYS old... to top it all, COKE zero was nonexistent, and no diet cool drink AT all, very very... More

If you love history, you will love this trip - if it is wet you can shelter in the cabin area or under roof at back. Very professionally run business

Went on the Waimarie riverboat paddle steamer on the river whanganui. It was a 2 hour trip and was 45 dollars. It was very relaxing but very hot on board don't sit near the engine. The smoke coming out of the chimney settles everywhere don't wear anything white as it settles on your clothes. The crew put a message on... More

I have done this trip several times but this last time I took three grandchildren. They wrote a note that was attached to a pigeon and were allowed to pat it on release, of course their note was given back to them on return to the depot via the pigeon. The children were given pictures to colour in with pencils... More

Although we had a rainy afternoon it was still enjoyable . The entertainment - keyboard player and singer suited the atmosphere. There was free dips and biscuits and the opportunity to purchase alcohol , tea , coffee and ice creams . A beautifully restored paddle steamer .

A fabulous way to while away a couple of hours. Only paddle steamer in NZ. Homing pigeons a nice touch for the kids to write messages for the birds to take them back to the ticket office to be collected after the journey. Staff knowledgeable and friendly. A beautiful ride up the Whanganui River on a sunny day. A must... More

Great trip on a beautifully restored paddle steam boat. The volunteers are knowledgeable and helpful both on board and in the museum. Unfortunately the Waimarie predates the requirement for wheelchair and pram accessibility and although we got on, space was very cramped. No one's fault tho, just the way it was made. Still a great trip.
