An interesting but slightly disappointing visit. The facility doesn't seem to be well maintained, and more importantly updated. The range of butterflies and orchids are somewhat disappointing. The overall environment show sign of neglect, and being run down. Same applies to the camp within which it is situated. A flyer describing the plants and insects could be provided on entry... More

A bit expensive (25$NZ) for what it is, but if butterflies are your thing you will love it. There are dozens of them from all parts of the world, flittering around a small area. The Butterfly and Orchid Garden is situated in the grounds of Dickson's camping ground which is a great place to stay the night!

We visited early in the morning and were surprised at how many varieties of butterflies were out and about. (We counted at least 30 - but no doubt there were plenty more) The tropical temperature inside the enclosure( needed for the butterflies to survive) meant the sweat was soon pouring off you. There is a small warm blower just inside the... I normally don't go in for these types of thing but I went to please my wife and found it to be quite wonderful. Beautiful butterflies and plants even a pond with fish, I did, however find it way too humid for me personally and had to leave after about 20 minutes but my wife could have stayed on as... More

We entered this relatively small enclosure and was met first by the in your face humidity. An artificially created tropical paradise for hundreds of butterflies (400 +) according to the owner. Several species, it takes only moments to be "greeted". I had a huge gorgeous one land on my thigh and stay there. So easy to photograph, they are domesticated!

this was a surprise winner; not much to look at from the outside (and at the end of a very narrow winding drive, in a fairly run down caravan park) but once you're inside, it's crammed with absolutely beautiful butterflys. Its not large, but loads of butterfly, and only about $30 entrance for a family of 5, good value.

If you have an interest in Butterflies at all, this is a place you should visit. Although it is not a huge Butterfly Garden, it is big enough for you to experience the magic of Butterflies. There are around 500 different species inside the garden and they are truly beautiful.

Naturally a hothouse to visit but worth the heat to see all the beautiful butterflies especially the blue ones which were constantly flying around you. You have to be careful when you leave, even though we checked one butterfly took a lift out on us - not sure where it hid but it fluttered out once we were out of... More

We visit the butterflies every New Year when we make our annual trip to stay with family in Waioumu. This year we noticed that the place felt a little run down, empty fish ponds out the front and a few dead butterflies lying around, for example. That said it's still very cool and this year I think there may actually... More
