Established in 1887, Bendigo Art Gallery is the largest, and one of the oldest regional galleries in Australia. The Gallery's collection is extensive and varied with an emphasis on 19th century European art and Australian art from 1800s onwards, alongside a strong collection of contemporary Australian art. The collection is complimented by dynamic temporary exhibitions and a diverse range of public programs and events.

This is a great light filled gallery that is a must for fashionistas...regularly holding exhibitions in partnership with galleries like the V&A. Always worth the trip out from the city to see what they have on, in recent times these have included the fascinating Undressed and the Grace Kelly exhibitions and the appeal is broad whether you are interested in... One of my first visits to the Bendigo Art Gallery was to see an exhibition of the work of Agnes Goodsir, who began her art studies in Bendigo before moving on to Paris, where she did some attractive paintings. These days the Gallery's Foundation offers a scholarship in Goodsir's name. Bendigo has hosted some fine exhibitions in recent years. And... More

So impressed with Bendigo Art Gallery. The collection was really well presented, great lighting (which is something a lot of well established international galleries don't seem to understand) and intelligently curated. We went there to see the Ben Quilty exhibition and was not disappointed - although it is a very small exhibition it packed a punch and confirmed our love... More

We made the 2 hr trip up from Melbourne to catch the Ben Quilty exhibition - an easy drive up the Calder and handy for getting some easy hours in our learner driver's log book. What a gem of a regional art gallery! Highly recommended for a leisurely Sunday drive from Melbourne. Make it a round trip and head back... More

They have some great exhibitions, collections you would not expect outside of a big city. Well laid out and sometimes they have large print guides so you can stand back and read the information without peering closely at the exhibit.

Wonderful glimpse of Australian culture from the gold rushes to the present, including splendid examples of an amazingly representative cross-section of the best Australian artists. Brilliantly displayed. This gallery will surprise and inspire you. A must see, if you visit Melbourne. Only 2 hours on excellent dual carriage freeway. Bendigo has splendid 19th Century architecture and wide streets showing Australia... More
