Awesome place

The variety and quality of the artworks. A place where time disappears because you can become so engrossed in the works on display.

Housed in one of Ballarat's beautiful iconic historic buildings, the gallery has a very impressive collection of paintings by Australian and overseas artists. There is a great display of paintings and photographs of the early history and events in the town and area during the gold rush days. The staff and guides, most of whom are volunteers, were very knowledgeable... More

Very large and beautiful old building with floor boards and large rooms. (The building itself is a work of art! As is the Lydiard St itself), free entry, great artworks, and exhibitions.

Heh, I'm not an overly arty type but I thoroughly enjoyed this gallery. Great overview of the history of Ballarat and also some really interesting art. I enjoyed it and was not in a rush to leave.

Great variety and range of exhibitions made it an interesting visit. Australian and European artists. Unexpectedly large, with impressively beautiful main staircase. Main entrance a little difficult to find.

Lovely gallery with comfy coffee shop attached. A mix of colonial through to contemporary art, in a lovely airy building.

An excellent collection of Australian art works, mainly paintings but also sculpture and even one exhibit that includes animation. One exhibit full of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders' art work, which seems a little underrepresented and tokenistic, but contains some interesting works. Also a good collection of European artists.

Have a look at the permanent collection. They have some lesser known early pieces by well known artists. Grand building makes you feel inspired just walking through the doors

I have visited several times over the years and the artworks have featured local and international artists, young and upcoming artists and many, many interesting showcases. Highly recommended, free of charge but will definitely donate every time I go!
