Getting into the middle of Fiordland has been on the on the “must do” list for many years and this Real Journeys day trip to Doubtful Sound ticked all the boxes. Milford Sound is spectacular and majestic, but it’s a little like the Las Vegas Strip of Fiordland with 500,000+ annual visitors and a heap of daily visitor traffic around.... More

We had a great time on this cruise. The views are fabulous and we saw dolphins, sea lions, etc. The naturalist was very knowledgeable, had a good sense of humor and was very approachable for conversation and questions. Given the need to feed alot of people in a short period of time, they were very organized and professional...and the food was... More

wasn't originally going to do a doubtful sound cruise, especially not as a solo backpacker, but the special they ran for the month of april plus the yha discount put it in my price range. so glad that worked out! doubtful sound is incredible, even with the mist and rain (worse for pictures, but better for a sense of awe... Brilliant. I was in two minds about whether to do this or Milford. In the end, I was so pleased we did the overnight on Doubtful and then drove to Milford and back from Te Anau. Looks like it will take ages but if you've done Doubtful first, you will probably not need to stop so often on your way... More

The key question to many is whether it is better than Milford? Hard. Its different. Definitely quieter than Milford so if avoiding the crowds is important to you then Doubtful wins. Also longer/bigger than Milford so there is more of it to look at. I think, though, that Milford pips it in the pure scenery stakes.

My husband and I did the overnight with Fiordland Cruises. I would HIGHLY recommend that experience. There were just 10 of us plus the crew on the boat. We went kayaking, fishing, saw dolphins. The food was great (made special accommodations for a vegetarian). The skipper let us sit up front with him in the morning while he watched for... More

Didn't expect to have to share this peaceful and tranquil overnight cruise with ~30 school kids screaming and shouting for nearly 20 hours. Completely ruined our enjoyment. This was to be one of the highlights of our first trip to New Zealand. How is it possible to book a school trip along with genuine travellers ?

Nice view, when the engine turned off, you can hear the birds' singing, water flowing. Wonderful to see the nature in this way

We parked on the extended stay car park at Manapouri and took the ferry across to the other side of Lake Manapouri where we were met by John our Captain and bus driver for the trip. He took us to Doubtful Sound where we boarded the lovely MV Southern Secret. We were settled in by T and then given a... More

Did a day trip. Highly recommend to kayak here over Milford due to reduced boat traffic. Power station visit is also cool.
