Doubtful sound is unquestionably a breathtaking place. We toured it by helicopter and on an overnight cruise and overwhelmingly the helicopter tour did more justice to the area. From the air you get more scale and a differently viewpoint on the area. And, it's pretty instantaneous. By boat, it's an hour across lake Manapouri followed by an hour on a... More

Took an overnight cruise with Fiordland Expeditions, and regretted it - because it's too short! Wish I had more time to soak in the peace and beauty of Doubtful Sound.

One of the most beautiful places in the world, though in winter there is only one boat visiting each day - and if the road to Milford Sound is closed it can be packed.

We took the Real Journeys cruise to Doubtful Sound from Te Anau. Pickup from our hotel door in a warm bus on a freezing day! The sound and also the road in is spectacular, particularly if the weather is good, which it was. We get right out into the Tasman Sea, and also saw sea ice in one of the... More

We stayed in Te Anau two nights just to go to Doubtful Sound. We reached there at around 1 PM. In winter there were not too many boats. The journey was nice. We went with Real Journey and our lunch at the boat was a Fallafel pita. It was good. On the day of our trip, the ocean was calm... More

This is a must-do for anyone keen on looking around Fiordland. I was last in the area 43 years ago and was delighted to find Manapouri and Deep Cove remain untouched by the hands of extreme commercialism. While the tour boats have gotten bigger thus allowing more people to enjoy the experience, the physical environment remains 'pure'. The day trip... More

We did a day trip to Milford Sound which was great and then we did an overnight cruise through Real Journeys to Doubtful Sound which was phenomenal! It's pretty pricey during the Christmas holidays so we did the bunks in the lowest level of the boat and it was great for my 3 daughters and myself. I was a little... More

Had a wonderful time out at the fiord with all the animals and scenery. Did an overnight winter cruise with Fiordland Expedition and really glad we did. Amazingly nice and friendly hosts and crew. The fact that they dive for fresh lobsters and cook like Michelin chefs are unbeatable points of their tours. Thanks Mandy and Richard for squeezing us... More

Partner and I did the overnight trip with the second tier organisation, and had a wonderful time. The fish we caught were simply cooked, and the crayfish that the crew caught were divine. Great organisation, crew and even the weather worked for us. We saw dolphins, seals and waterbirds as well as amazing mountains. Great time.
