The town of Te Anau can get very busy but if you visit it in winter and shoulder season you have the lake edges all to yourself. Great photo opportunities especially when you have snow capped mountains as the back drop

What a surprise. I had done some research prior to going to Te Anau and only went as a base for other sightseeing tours. The town is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I was there in Winter and every minute of every day was a photo opportunity. Quite. Peaceful. The lake with the mountain backdrop. Birds chirping. Went for several wonderful long... More

I sat by this lake for a long time and it was so very peaceful. It was mid winter so the water was freezing but it was so serene and beautiful. Definitely worth a visit with a cute little town to explore behind it.

My opinion, soonest you arrive Queenstown by International flights, take a car at the airport and, either drive to Wanaka right away or better, te Anau. Do Queenstown at the last leg of your trip if you must. Te Anau has lots of easy walk along the lake, all the way and far away, 2 hrs 3 hrs or even... More

An amazing. view ever changing the clouds just make it. The land of the long white cloud. The walk around the edge of the lake is worth going on. Saw the yacht club juniors sailing one evening in their Optimist, sailors for the future.

The areas around the Lake were really beautiful and awesome, especially during the sunset and sunrise with its mountains at the background. However, it was very cold and windy when we visited Te Anau in November 2013 on the way to Milford Sound. Since my wife could not stand cold weather, we spent only half an hour on the beach... More

The views across the lake to the mountains make it hard to take a poor photo. Sunsets can be outstanding and there is plenty of easily-accessible shoreline to stake out a good location. The town of Te Anau is the "gateway to Fiordland" and there are plenty of accommodation options. Spend a couple of days here, wander along the lakeshore... More

Like - the geography, the western side of the lake, the bays, the islands in South Arm, the Glow Worm Caves, the mountains. Like - the beautiful north end of the lake near the wharf leading to Glade House and the Milford Track - been there twice.. Love - the Waiau River, so clear, so green - my favorite river.... More
