While we didn't go out on the lake, you can't help but admire it while in Te Anau. It is surrounded by mountains and frames this small town perfectly. While Te Anau itself isn't big enough to hold you for a long time, the lake and countryside surrounding it is postcard-perfect.

Lake Te Anau is beautiful. Te Anau was really relaxing and quiet. It's pretty small, but everything's easy to get to. It's a great place to base any exploration of Fiordland, or to hike. And, if you're lucky, you might see some takahe, a native New Zealand bird that looks like a big blue chicken. The lake itself is great... More

Lake Te Anau is a quiet and peaceful place, but also very close to the town center ( easy to get to the gift shop, mall, ATM, restaurant and etc.) u can do some outdoor water sports here. A helicopter company can also give u chance to get a bird-eye view for this beautiful lake.

The town of Te Anau can get very busy but if you visit it in winter and shoulder season you have the lake edges all to yourself. Great photo opportunities especially when you have snow capped mountains as the back drop

What a surprise. I had done some research prior to going to Te Anau and only went as a base for other sightseeing tours. The town is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I was there in Winter and every minute of every day was a photo opportunity. Quite. Peaceful. The lake with the mountain backdrop. Birds chirping. Went for several wonderful long... More

I sat by this lake for a long time and it was so very peaceful. It was mid winter so the water was freezing but it was so serene and beautiful. Definitely worth a visit with a cute little town to explore behind it.

My opinion, soonest you arrive Queenstown by International flights, take a car at the airport and, either drive to Wanaka right away or better, te Anau. Do Queenstown at the last leg of your trip if you must. Te Anau has lots of easy walk along the lake, all the way and far away, 2 hrs 3 hrs or even... More

An amazing. view ever changing the clouds just make it. The land of the long white cloud. The walk around the edge of the lake is worth going on. Saw the yacht club juniors sailing one evening in their Optimist, sailors for the future.
