Owner description: Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience tours operate exclusively in Stewart Island and Ulva Island. We are an independent, small local operator specialising in guided walks, overnight treks, bird watching (including pelagic birding) and kiwi spotting tours, boat cruises, sea kayaking and scenic road tours. Our tours are designed to capture the best the island has to offer and carefully matching this to the interests and abilities of the most discerning traveller. Whether you are a gentle explorer or adventurous and active, whether your interests are general or you are an avid birdwatcher, botanist, naturalist or photographer, we certainly have something to offer. Guides bring their in-depth knowledge, a sense of fun with a few local tales, to create a truly memorable experience. We care about the environment and strive to adopt and maintain sustainable practises. Since 2003, we have been donating some of our revenue into our own conservation fund per person per guided tour and water taxi charter. Our tours are all of generous length offering great value. We care about your experience so all our tours are personalised and we can adapt them along the way. Small groups range from 2 to 12 persons. We do cater for private tour groups of more than 12 persons. Customised / private tours are also available. We recommend prior bookings. We operate our own booking office in Stewart Island and we strongly advise that you check directly with us as there are no independent visitors centres in Stewart Island.

Furhana's in-depth knowledge and passion for Stewart Island's wildlife and environment is refreshing and deeply informative. We booked the Ulva Island Bird and Forest Walk approx 4hrs relative easy walking stopping frequently to bird spot. The walk requires good walking shoes, water a snack and also a raincoat (a must for Stewart Island). Furhana had our group mesmerized by what... More

Furhana, owner of RR, was able to lead us to all the endemic bird species on the island within a couple of hours. Most birders, however, don't know about plants and I was especially pleased at the complete knowledge of our guide. As a small business owner Furhana does everything herself so you get lots of special attention. Unfortunately, the... More

Cynthia it was great to have Robert and yourself come on my Ulva Island Birds & Forest full day tour. The birds were terrific that morning, giving us time to go and explore the Snuggery in the afternoon. I was lucky to have a group of like-minded clients interested enjoying the day for what it brought and just enjoying watching... More

We spent two complete days (2nd and 3rd January) with Furhana, firstly completing the Ulva Island Bird and Forest Walk then the next day completing the Coastal Highlights tour. When booking the trip to Stewart Island I called Furhana directly and she organised everything for us - flights, accommodation and the scenic/wildlife tours. I was impressed immediately with her friendliness... More

Thank you so much Leon & Jessie for bringing your delightful family on my tours and for your kindness and understanding and the insights you provided me with. The children were terrific and so well behaved, but also full of life and fun and I loved having them on my tours - I will remember them for a long time. More

Half day trip to Ulva Island from Stewart Is including transfers from motel and a quick 10 min boat trip to Island. Ulva Island is situated within Paterson Inlet and is an island with easy walks, beautiful beaches and it is a rat free island and is thriving with native birds and plants. Furhana was our guide and was a... More

Lisa thank you so much for choosing us for your tour to Ulva Island and following up on the recommendation that Peter had come across. I also appreciated Peter's email to say how much his interested had been ignited in our native birds. It helps me to know that clients are going away with a greater understanding of nature. Thank... We loved the tour run by Furhana on Ulva island. She is so knowledgeable and filled with fascinating details. We saw saddlebacks, fantails, and many others. She also started as skipper of her own boat tours on Christmas day and we were delighted to spend 30 extra minutes watching the rare yellow eyed penguin preening. She takes her nature seriously... Thank you so much Paul for "taking me out" on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We certainly had some exciting moments on two lovely days exploring the flora and fauna on Ulva Island and the richness of our marine life on our Aihe - Paterson Inlet Wildlife Cruise - the yellow-eyed penguin that sprung up as we were heading home... Must go with Ruggedy Range. Furhana is knowledgable about all local flora and fauna. She'll taylor the tour to your interests. She keeps the group quite to hear the bird calls and finds something great before you know it. On the Ulva Island tour we saw and photographed about 14 different kinds of birds--4 of which were introduced onto the... More

It was a rewarding afternoon with some exciting birding including great views of the mohua (yellow head), saddleback and robin, and lovely view of the rifleman, but of course truly appreciative clients that made the afternoon a pleasure. I loved how Paul was whispering quietly so as not to disturb the birds and how quiet our group was as we... More

Furhana guided us on a tour of Ulva flora and fauna. She is a very knowledgeable guide and in addition knows how to find the birds. She found us a Kiwi!

The kiwi sighting was nice bonus to our trip whilst we were watching the yellow-crowned parakeets. What a wonderful view we all had as it crossed the path to continue its journey on the other side of the track. I hope that the rest of your holidays in New Zealand were rewarding and enjoyable. Thank you for coming on our... More

The main reason to go to predator-free Ulva Island is to birdwatch, and the best way to spot birds is to go on a guided walk with an experienced nature guide like Furhana, who's familiar with the appearances, behaviors and calls of the birds, as well as knowledgeable about local flora. Furhana helped us spot forest-dwelling Fantails, Tuis, Bellbirds, Kererus... More

I really loved the photos you took on our trip and it reminded me of the variety of birds we saw and and how well we saw them. Well done for capturing the mohua (yellowhead) peering out of its nest. The orchid and fern pictures were just beautiful. I hope you will enjoy wonderful memories of Ulva Island for a... More

Despite the "dodgy" weather Furhana accommodated our group of 6 and went the extra mile to make sure we saw what we came to see - Island tour, Ulva Island and Pelagic birding. We were not disappointed. This is the second time we have been guided by Furhana on Ulva Island. Her passion for the area, her knowledge not just... More

We flew into Stewart Island for a day's adventure without really planning what we were going to do.
