Owner description: Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience tours operate exclusively in Stewart Island and Ulva Island. We are an independent, small local operator specialising in guided walks, overnight treks, bird watching (including pelagic birding) and kiwi spotting tours, boat cruises, sea kayaking and scenic road tours. Our tours are designed to capture the best the island has to offer and carefully matching this to the interests and abilities of the most discerning traveller. Whether you are a gentle explorer or adventurous and active, whether your interests are general or you are an avid birdwatcher, botanist, naturalist or photographer, we certainly have something to offer. Guides bring their in-depth knowledge, a sense of fun with a few local tales, to create a truly memorable experience. We care about the environment and strive to adopt and maintain sustainable practises. Since 2003, we have been donating some of our revenue into our own conservation fund per person per guided tour and water taxi charter. Our tours are all of generous length offering great value. We care about your experience so all our tours are personalised and we can adapt them along the way. Small groups range from 2 to 12 persons. We do cater for private tour groups of more than 12 persons. Customised / private tours are also available. We recommend prior bookings. We operate our own booking office in Stewart Island and we strongly advise that you check directly with us as there are no independent visitors centres in Stewart Island.

The main reason to go to predator-free Ulva Island is to birdwatch, and the best way to spot birds is to go on a guided walk with an experienced nature guide like Furhana, who's familiar with the appearances, behaviors and calls of the birds, as well as knowledgeable about local flora. Furhana helped us spot forest-dwelling Fantails, Tuis, Bellbirds, Kererus... More

Despite the "dodgy" weather Furhana accommodated our group of 6 and went the extra mile to make sure we saw what we came to see - Island tour, Ulva Island and Pelagic birding. We were not disappointed. This is the second time we have been guided by Furhana on Ulva Island. Her passion for the area, her knowledge not just... More

We flew into Stewart Island for a day's adventure without really planning what we were going to do. We thought we would like to take a guided tour so we walked up Main St to see what might be available on short notice. We had mailed one ventor the night before and was hoping to get an answer momentarily but... More

This was the second time that we visited Ulva island, frankly the first time with Paterson Inlet cruises was a waste of time and money for us. We paid less and seen everything we wanted to, despite the terrible weather; Furhana Ahmad is a very good guide, not just for birds but for all aspects of native plants and insects.... More

Furhana could not be a better guide. We took two trips with her - one in the evening around Stewart Island and the next morning we explored Ulva Island with her. She is a wealth of information and so anxious to share this very special place. You would never see a fraction of the flora and fauna without her as... More

We did two trips with Ruggedy Range during our three days on Stewart Island and really enjoyed them both. The first was the coastal highlights tour which covered a whole host of the plant life on the island - trees, ferns, orchids and plants, many of which had a very interesting story. It rained heavily on this tour but that... More

My wife and I had two great days with Furhana one on Stewart Island and one on Ulva Island. Furhana is a great asset to Stewart Island. Very knowledgeable answers all questions and can find the birds. If you don't go with Ruggedy Range you will miss orchids, ferns and living trees with holes thru them. The best part is that... More

Had the pleasure of being guided around Ulva Island by Farhana yesterday. Easy and convenient booking, gathered onto a boat for a quick shuttle to Ulva. Such a unique place to visit, totally blown away by the birds and bush seen through the eyes and ears of our guide. Groups of people without a guide aimlessly walked past us. Our... More

Our visit to Stewart Island was the highlight of 2 weeks in the south of the South Island, thanks to Furhana. She organised our ferry to the Island, our accommodation there, and our flight back and in between took us on three great trips specifically designed for us and perfectly suited to the pace we wanted. We had 4 hours... More

Thank you Furhana for the outstanding guided tour we did with you recently on Ulva Island. We were amazed by your comprehensive knowledge of the forest and the birds - many of which we continued to identify on our trip around the South Island (thanks to you). It's unusual to find a guide who is truly passionate about their work,... More

Many thanks Rosemary & Andrew - I am really pleased that the sightings and information provided helped in the rest of your journey through the South Island. Once you start identifying the birds and plants your opportunity for seeing and appreciating other things grows. My tours have always been longer so that you can get more out of your experience...
