Description: Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience tours operate exclusively in Stewart...
Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience tours operate exclusively in Stewart Island and Ulva Island. We are an independent, small local operator specialising in guided walks, overnight treks, bird watching (including pelagic birding) and kiwi spotting tours, boat cruises, sea kayaking and scenic road tours. Our tours are designed to capture the best the island has to offer and carefully matching this to the interests and abilities of the most discerning traveller. Whether you are a gentle explorer or adventurous and active, whether your interests are general or you are an avid birdwatcher, botanist, naturalist or photographer, we certainly have something to offer. Guides bring their in-depth knowledge, a sense of fun with a few local tales, to create a truly memorable experience. We care about the environment and strive to adopt and maintain sustainable practises. Since 2003, we have been donating some of our revenue into our own conservation fund per person per guided tour and water taxi charter. Our tours are all of generous length offering great value. We care about your experience so all our tours are personalised and we can adapt them along the way. Small groups range from 2 to 12 persons. We do cater for private tour groups of more than 12 persons. Customised / private tours are also available. We recommend prior bookings. We operate our own booking office in Stewart Island and we strongly advise that you check directly with us as there are no independent visitors centres in Stewart Island.

We have just returned from doing a whole day trip to Ulva Island with Furhana. We woud recommend doing a whole day if you have the time as we got to walk to The Snuggery which is off the beaten Tourist Track and saw so many birds it was like an Avery. Furhana has the best sense of bird sounds... More

We really enjoyed the half day trip to Ulva Island. Furhana knew all the birds and where to find them. She also told us about the interesting plantlife and history etc. A very worthwhile experience with a very knowledgable leader. We would recommend this tour to everyone, whether experienced birdwatcher or novice.

We are not really avid bird watchers nor fauna and flora experts, however, we booked the half day walk on Ulva Island with Furhana as our guide. She was great and her knowlege is phenominal. Every few minutes we stopped and she told us what bird was singing, and more often than not she pointed out the bird in question.... More

There is much to see and do on Ulva Island and Stewart Island and on all the walks and tours we offer. There is much to show and share about our natural environment, birds and other creatures. Having now guided here for 16 seasons, a wealth of knowledge has been built up, but there is so much more to learn... More

The effort to get to Stewart Island was amply repaid with an excellent bird-oriented nature walk. Furhana has an extensive knowledge of local flora and fauna, and has an ear that can only be labeled 'phenomenal.' Don't be put off by her insistence on keeping quiet and keeping together. Based on our experience, you'll be amply rewarded as she locates... More

Many, many thanks James for your thoughtful review. Birding is an art in keeping quiet and looking carefully and you were all terrific in working with me to ensure we got to see as much as possible. I really love watching kiwi go about their daily wanderings in the forest, absorbed in their own little world searching for worms and... More

My wife and I did the 1-day bird watching tour on Ulva Island with Furhana in February 2015. Furhana is a one-person ball of energy and is incredibly knowledgeable about the birds, their calls, and flora of Ulva Island. The morning part of the tour focused on birds and stuck to well worn paths. The afternoon part of the tour... More

Bill and Marianne - what a great day we had on Ulva Island this year, in mid-February and the nice show of birds, including the saddleback, yellowhead, rifleman, robins, red and yellow-crowned parakeets, the kaka parrot and more, not forgetting the kiwi and the yellow-eyed penguin, which were thrilling bonuses. Our small group make the experience more pleasurable. I hope... More

We did the all day bird watching tour on Ulva island and had a great time! Furhana was a great guide and got us out there before the masses arrived. We even got to see a Kiwi for a few minutes and a lot of other birds as well. She keeps you moving early on to get to some really... More

Phil, I really enjoyed having Michelle and yourself on our full day tour on Ulva Island and especially for your sense of fun and laughter. I have some nice pictures of you all watching some of the birds we saw and what a thrill to come across a kiwi quietly going about foraging in daylight hours. Hope you both have... More

We where really helped with the planning of our trip, since all the huts on the Rakiura track where fully booked and tide didn't permit a drop off or pick up by water taxi. Furahna equipped us with everything, gear and information, we needed, to go on this beautiful two day hike. Thanks again! This made our Stewart Island experience... More

My husband and I took a trip with Furhana in January of this year. She was extremely well prepared and extremely knowledgeable about all of the birds on Ulva Island. We were extremely lucky and she managed to spot a kiwi in the day time which we were able to observe for over 10 minutes. Truly a unique experience. I... More

Thank you so much Robyn for your review. On some of the days you would think of having a lie in - it is often better to be out and about. We were lucky to watch a kiwi, though it felt like 10 minutes, we watched it for nearly 20 minutes, whilst it probed the ground next to the tracks.... More

My wife, Rachel, and I spent 5 days with Furhana on Stewart Island in January, 2015 and really had a wonderful time. I am an enthusiastic wildlife photographer and wanted to take good quality pictures of Kiwi, Yellowhead, Riflemen and Weka. This I acheived with many other species I had not expected. I am certain I would not have succeeded... More

I can't forget the pictures you took of the kiwi at Mason Bay - we were so lucky with the weather and being in the right place. The slight drizzle added a wonderful, natural element to the images. Furhana's in-depth knowledge and passion for Stewart Island's wildlife and environment is refreshing and deeply informative. We booked the Ulva Island Bird and Forest Walk approx 4hrs relative easy walking stopping frequently to bird spot. The walk requires good walking shoes, water a snack and also a raincoat (a must for Stewart Island). Furhana had our group mesmerized by what... More

Bella it was a pleasure to meet Ed and yourself and I was fortunate that you had seen a a written recommendation whilst on the Island for our tours, which led you to my office.
