Forget about any white water activity you`ve ever seen. This is Serious Fun Riversurfing. The most exciting, exhilarating and interactive water activity on the planet. Each trip begins in a calm section of the river; the guides give you a full safety briefing and teach you the basics in riversurfing before you set off on your white water adventure. We have the world’s most experienced and qualified guides and 100% safety record since 1989. Where did it all begin? Jon Imhof, a surfer from Hawaii, came to Queenstown to go snowboarding and he liked Queenstown so much that he decided to stay for summer. Missing the waves of the ocean, he looked for an alternative and came up with the crazy idea to follow the rafters down the Shotover River and surf waves on his body board. Although the rapids were great, he found it was too shallow and decided to go down the Kawarau River instead, and the sport of riversurfing was born.In 1989, with riversurfing in high demand, Jon established Serious Fun Riversurfing, the original riversurfing company. A few years later, after looking for other suitable locations around the world, Jon started a sister company on the Zambezi in 1995 and some of the African guides took the sport up to the White Nile in Uganda, and to this day, these are the only three places in the world you can go riversurfing! « less

Luckily squeezed this in on my first day in QT. The instructors who took us out (Rose, Dan and Heidi) were excellent and really entertaining throughout the experience. The water is so clean you could literally drink it (and we did). Such a fun morning, be brave on the second run and tackle the bigger rapids!

It seems all they want to do is get through the run and keep you in a bunch. As a result of being in a bunch people are on top of you, beside you and kicking you. There were a couple of times I was in the group, doing ok, and a guide comes up and grabs my board and... More

Thank you for taking the time to write your feedback on TripAdvisor. We are sorry that you felt like you were "bunched" up in a group. The reason that we keep everyone together is safety. Due to the dynamic nature of the whitewater it is inevitable that people will bunch up on occasion. The current of the water can be... More

The river surfing was great fun and very well run by the guides--we had essentially a guide each (very good to pull us out of trouble when we got a bit tired near the end!). Really good fun, and the wet suits kept us very warm. My only reason for a 4 not a 5 is that at $195 for... More

We visited queenstown in February and decided as a family to one "extreme" sport. Bungy jumping was too death-defying for us, so we decided to all go 'Riversurfing'. What an amazing experience! Even our daughter (10yrs old) had a great time. Her personal guide told me at the beginning of the adventure; "Don't worry about Esther, I've got her." All... More

So much fun going down the beautiful river! And the guides were so good at teaching us tricks and explaining what we needed to do. Super skilled! Highly recommended! I wish I had brought a go pro helmet cam.

This takes place on a 5km stretch of river just outside of Queenstown. The water is crystal clear and blue. It wasn't as cold as i imagined, the wetsuits are quite warm. The river is in a tight gorge which provides stretches of calm water and stretches of very choppy water. There are no rocks beneath the water to bang... More

Spur of the moment decisions can be terrible, but the one I made to go river surfing couldn't have been better. A friend told me about this activity and suggested I do it if I had time, and I'm glad I did. The guides on my trip were fantastic, and made sure that not only were we being safe, but... More

A totally unique experience. Family of 6, with older teenagers, this trip was thoroughly enjoyed by al of us. It is a challenge, especially for us oldies, but well worth it. Having a second run, was great as more confident knowing now what to expect. Guides were fantastic and the trip was well organized. Only our family in the group... More
