Having travelled a fair bit around New Zealand, the scenery is pretty special almost everywhere but the drive around the Otago Peninsula is a 'must-do' when visiting the Dunedin area. We were lucky in having a glorious day for our trip - wouldn't be so good with low cloud or rain! The views are spectacular and it pays to explore... More

We couldn't wait to see the wild-life we were promised on the peninsula. We picked a lovely bright afternoon and drove our car all the way out along the windy roads and along the rugged coast for 25km or so, to arrive at the Albatross Sanctuary and be told they were closed at 3.15pm! I'm not sure if we would... More

The vistas range from driving just beside the water to majestic views from rugged hill-tops and cliffs. Definitely worth visit and a stay.

the Otago is a great place to spend a couple of days to explore. the blue penguins are a must see. The road out to the albatross is a bit bendy but worth it.

try to catch it early in the morning with the calm waters of the harbour reflecting the hills, a quite stunning piece of scenery. narrow roads require care, whoever is driving has trouble admiring the scenery :) Sandfly Bay is so beautiful, with penguins and sealions, the whole area is just divine

With albatross, penguins, seals and other bird life this is a really interesting place and while the road along the water is windy it certainly gives great views.

Picturesque and great bird viewing, but, as noted in other reviews, not an easy drive. Also, the best penguin viewing seems to be cornered by tour operators, so recommend using Elm Wildlife if you want to have a good chance to see the yellow-eyed penguin.

Inland roads also very narrow in places. Enjoyed the castle but saw little evidence of wildlife. In a spectacular country such as New Zealand we did not find it exceptional.

The peninsula is long and extremely beautiful but is made special by the penguins and seals that can be seen in their natural habitat. Albatrosses are also there but we did not set out to see them on this visit. The return of the penguins to land at dusk is a marvellous thing to watch at close quarters
