Such an experience. The Dunedin Railway Station itself was a treat with its ornate walls and ceiling - beautiful architecture. The train with its antique wooden carriages were right out of the "Cowboy Western" movie. And the seats...loved it. Beautiful scenery all along the way with entertaining commentary. You get to stand and take photos are the viewing platforms up... More

Very highly recommended. An incredible train ride into amazing country with excellent commentary and facilities. Stops at otherwise inaccessible locations. Great fun all round. Can’t fault it. Do it.

to be fair if you need to kill half a day do this trip. It was good but the scenery wasnt that awesome - a river and gorse....and once you got to the end of the track you turned around and saw the same scenery on the way back. It was ok but wouldnt rave.

The train leaves at 12.30 so arrive with a bit of time to kill. You'll want to have a look around the beautiful station itself and maybe the settler museum next door too. The trip itself is fascinating, especially for train buffs. The commentary is entertaining, the views are beautiful. They have a good selection of food and drink on... More

I took this trip as a relaxing trip through the New Zealand countryside. The antique rail cars are very interesting in their own right. We had tea and wine on our trip. The service was excellent and people friendly. We made several stops to stretch our legs and take pictures. They have a small trolley that sold postcards etc. to... More

Train trip was fun, scenery was amazing as was the weather. A good experience on a small train, staff were very friendly and helpful. The tran stopped at vantage points for photos which I thought was very good. Value for money.

Very scenic. Pity it doesn't go as far as Middlemarch any longer. There wasn't much water in the river due to a dry spell.

This was an interesting excursion. We didn't know what to expect, and it wasn't mind-blowing, but we enjoyed it. Basically you're sitting on a train for about 2 hours seeing pretty scenery, have about 20 minutes to stretch at the end, then you turn around and sit for another 2 hours seeing the same scenery from a different direction and... We were in Dunedin for a day on a Princess Cruise. This trip was something we'd missed on our first visit to this lovely city, so here was our chance. There's a tour available from the ship, but we booked through the railway website, saving ourselves around $200 each and securing a ride in one of the historic carriages. Perhaps... More

Took my father and his partner on this trip and we all loved it. The seats aren't that comfortable but it is an historic train after all! Difficult for less mobile people to get on the carriages because of the steps. However the actual journey is very enjoyable.
