A MUST if visiting Dunedin. The service at the station & on the train was excellent, & the on-board commentary was really insightful. If you can, go on a Sunday as the train goes a little further to Middlemarch, a lovely destination with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

Great experience even though relatively expensive. The landscape is changing constantly and information about the history is given. There are a few short stops to take pictures.

Excellent day out from Dunedin to Middlemarch. Train travelled at a nice speed to enable you to take in the commentary etc and the stops to stretch your legs were good. Food was yummy (you have to try the cheese rolls!!) and reasonably priced too (compared to the likes of the Tranz or Coastal run by KiwiRail)

Scenic and historic trip. Quaint train, comfortable and exciting journey. Railway staff very pleasant, good narrative and good value lunch.

I am not a trainspotter by any means but this was spectacular. We joined the train at Pukerungi (Queenstown tour company dropped us there) and headed into Dunedin. Informative and picturesque. Staff were fantastic and enthusiastic. Well worth seeing

We didn't really think it was worth the money - not as good as it looked in the advertising. It would be a nice way to travel if you were on the way from Dunedin to Queenstown but we thought it was quite expensive for what it is. Good food available to buy and comfortable seats. All in all a... More

I have been on the train so many times, love going up through the countryside, the scenery is beautiful, the train very comfortable and the commentary very good and informative. Nice to be able to get refreshments as well.

We had a great time from the moment we drove up to the historic Dunedin Railway Station. With our half price tickets in hand (booked on bookme.com the day before), we arrived early to see the beautiful station with stain glass windows. We were greeted with a smile and a very helpful staff. The passenger car was just like you... More

The train is wonderful, the scenery great, and the staff, particularly the commentators and very informative and entertaining. It is weird because the point at which we turned around was in the middle of nowhere. There was no view to speak of. Basically there was no destination and it just feels wrong. This leads to the other thing that is... More

Hi there and thanks for your comments about Taieri Gorge Railway. We are glad you enjoyed the outward journey of the train trip and found the crew informative and entertaining. You are correct, Pukerangi is not exactly a bustling metropolis - it is anything but. Some people love the fact that the train does pretty much stop in the middle... More
