If you have time make sure you book onto this trip. We did the 2 hour trip and back. Our carriage was quite busy whilst other carriages seemed quite empty so not sure how they work out spacing carriages apart. But you kind of need to seat where you are told, but feel free to move about once the train... More

We travelled on the Taieri George Railway expecting something similar to the preserved rail lines in the UK but this is rather more spectacular. We were very lucky with the weather but even on a cloudy day the trip along the george would be worth making. Wingatui Viaduct is something of a highlight but there are plenty of other places... We went with the Taieri Gorge Railway on a four-hour trip to Pukerangi. You're allowed to bring (or you can buy) food and drink on the train and we would highly recommend doing so as every seat has a table and it's perfect for having lunch or dinner. The train ride is quite long and it felt a bit tedious... More

We chose to travel across from Queenstown to Dunedin using the bus / train combo. The gorge was fantastic and our photos that we brought home were a testament to the ‘experience’ . . . We loved the old rattler and the friendliness ofvthe, staff & the opportunity to chat with othrr travellers. Would do this again in a heartbeat:-))

Very relaxing journey into the gorge although the scenery didn't change as much during the trip as I thought it might. Still pretty though. Only did the shorter trip as the full trip to Middlemarch wasn't running when in town.

Absolutely stunning views from beginning to end with a full commentary along the way taking you back through the history of the railway. Extremely interesting and there's stop off points along the way in which you get step off the train and take photos of the surroundings. There's also a cafe on board with a wide variety of hot and... As one travels down the Taieri Gorge Railway it is difficult to put oneself into the place of those old time gold miners who used this route in the past. However, suspending judgement, and simply experiencing the way in which the railway clings to the side of the gorge, hanging over the vertical drops to the river below, and crawling... More

We have just been on the train trip to Middlemarch. Absolutely brilliant. Dave the duty manager is very entertaining with his commentary (even tho he's not a kiwi!) The carriage was lovely and warm and stepping outside to enjoy the refreshing winter bite made the inside even more pleasant! Wasn't surprised that food and drinks are expensive but that seems... An aged train with an entourage of carriages of various ages make this an adventure in days of past glory through some of the most rugged and inhospitable land around. See how early pioneers battled thick bush and rushing waters to explore and inhabit this beautiful (in Summer) and blisteringly cold (in Winter) land. The train has two stops and... More
