They run 2 trips a day up and down to Pukerangi, through the Taieri Gorge. We took the morning departure from Dunedin. It's difficult to describe the trip in detail other than just saying - the scenery is awesome, the engineering necessary to build this track is amazing, the the enjoyment of it all was just fabulous. Lots of photo... More

A great way to enjoy the scenery, carriages quaint but comfortable and the commentary on all the trip was excellent. However we thought that we were going all the way to Middlemarch but as there were two cruise ships in port our journey was only two hours each way. Also as our train had done a previous trip and the... More

This five hour return trip on a narrow gauge railway from Dunedin is truly spectacular. Quaint rail cars take guests across a rugged landscape complete with several tunnels and even more bridges. The highlight is the Taieri gorge crossing. With ample opportunities foe videos and photos, this trio is one for thrill seekers and for history buffs alike. The $95.00... More

We booked this cruise via a cruise ship wasn't the cheapest but included all our food and drinks. Can be booked direct ,only thing is you have to make your way from Pt Chalmers to station in Dunedin .I believe food is not included .But a lot cheaper than cruise ship prices. It is staffed by local volunteers who were... More

My 74 year old Mother and I did this trip. We chose the four hour train trip that went to Pukerangi and back. We found this quite sufficient. (The six hour trip goes all the way to Middlemarch with a one hour stop at this town.) The scenery was breathtaking. It wouldn't be so good on a misty or rainy... More

A brilliant way to see a little of the stunning scenery of sheep country outside Dunedin. In a comfortable, ancient, railway carriage with our own guide and refreshment provider Margaret ( a railway volunteer) we boarded at the Dunedin Cruise Ship Terminal and were whisked away into the beautiful and otherwise almost inaccessible Taieri Gorge. Interesting commentary, great picnic lunch... More

We boarded the train at Pukerangi after 5 days cycling the Central Otago Rail Trail. 99.9% of the passengers were day trippers. Our allocated seats were actually on the far side of the train, so no views over the gorge or viaducts. However, we were able to move up a few carriages,,and spent most of the trip on the open... Taieri Gorge Railway was another excursion on our cruise. It brought back childhood memories of train rides and the love of model trains. The ceanary was breathtaking through the mountains, which excellent commentary from the train driver and our marriage host. We were provided with tea, coffee and cookies for morning tea; cheese, crackers and wine and then we had... More

Worth the cost of the ticket, so glad we didn't book ahead as the day we originally wanted was forecast pouring rain all day! We checked the weather forecast and then booked the journey during our stay. We were advised to do the 2.30 run to avoid the Cruise Ship passengers in the morning, and had to pop into the... More
