Beautiful scenery but avoid the cheese roll!

This was a pleasant four hours on a train. There were lots of lovely photo opportunities. The staff were lovely, funny and helpful; really liked the commentary. Good characters!

This was a GREAT way to spend four hours! The Gorge itself is just beautiful, and the narrative was very interesting. We stopped once on the way up, then at the turn-aroung point. At each of those stops, there were a few vendors of local wares -- honey, woolen goods, etc. They were very low-key, and not in the least... More

We were on the early morning departure and left on time and immediately could enjoy some lovely scenery and later on we could wonder at the skill of the engineers and builders who had managed to sculpt this railway through some very difficult countryside. If possible try to get one of the carriages with open platforms at each end which... More

We arrived in Dunedin aboard the Celebrity Solstice on Feb 12, 2015. We had pre-booked this trip, along with several other Cruise Critic members, online, through Murray at the train station, for round trip transfers from the ship, the train and a city tour of Dunedin for $125NZ/pp, which was much lower than the ship tour and very affordable by... A great trip incorporating lovely scenery, an insight into how the men battled nature and the elements when building the track, and the engineering feats accomplished. The commentary was made interesting by Dave, and the carriage staff add their personal touches to make this a memorable trip. This could be a trip to be repeated when the snow is around... More

Did an online booking for Taieri Gorge Railway through The Good Company the price was cheaper than the cruise line. Bus transfer to the historic train station with commentary. The journey takes about six hours to Middlemarch the scenery was great several... More

If you have time you should do this trip. I found it a little long and the beginning of the journey isn't terribly interesting. We were there after a long spell of dry weather so the rivers had dried up but I can imagine it would be even more beautiful after rain. The line itself is a masterly piece of... More

In March 2015 my wife and I cruised from Perth to Sydney via the South Island of New Zealand on the Radiance of the Seas. All ship excursions are notoriously expensive and this one was no exception being twice the price of private operators. So on this occasion while in Dunedin we decided we would do the Taieri Gorge Railway... More

Great venture, great views and location. Gorges, rivers, mountains all in one, great hosts and commentary. Stops along the way, great views. Get out of the cab and outside to feel, smell and hear the train. Good day out, thoroughly enjoyed.

Boarding at Dunedin Railway Station a very commanding building in the town centre with a great art gallery upstairs, this train takes you up the gorge following the river. Some amazing bridges have been built in days gone by to facilitate this railway. Staff on the train were very friendly and chatty. Good commentary along the way explaining the sights... More
