We stepped aboard the Taieri Gorge train at Port Chalmers where our cruise ship was docked. It was a drizzly day the day we took the train ride, which did cause some discomfort when getting off the train at the various stops along the way and for taking photos through the windows of the train. The train made 3 stops... More

We had the best seats in the house for the outward journey, the ones at the very back so it was really easy to step out onto the open platform and take in the view. The train carriages were from the 1920's, but were quite comfortable. The scenery was spectacular and Lyall's commentary was witty and informative. There were convenient... More

Took this as part of a 5.5 hour cruise shore excursion. First hour was awful - mostly the wrong side of the tracks view of railway - made worse by a very long 20 minute wait for rail traffic at the historic Dunedin Station (we were not allowed off) just fifteen minutes into the ride. Once the train started climing... More

We took the half-day Taire Gorge Train Ride from Dunedin that was to leave at an appointed time. However, it was delayed because another train was leaving at the same time, and rules required 20 minutes between departures. This was not a "special" trip, so we were surprised as to why two trains were even scheduled at the same time.... More

A fantastic way to see some of the south. The old fashioned train was comfortable and the scenery fantastic. I enjoyed the commentary as we travelled. A pleasant way to spend a few hours.

We travelled to Dunedin from a cruise for a day and decided to try the Taieri Gorge Railway as the photos of the attraction were terrific and we expected continuing and changing views throughout the trip. We chose to book directly with the railway and not through the ship and saved ourselves over $200 each. As a result we travelled... More

a nice afternoon out, scenic in parts, although quite a bit of stopping in the first part. once it gets going the scenery does improve. It's not Flamsbana Norway scenery, but nevertheless enjoyable.

Fantastic scenery, great voyage. If it's a hot day, make sure you take plenty of water as there is no drinkable water on board except for sale in the cafe car at $3 per 500ml bottle.

We joined the rail journey as part of a Celebrity Solstice shore excursion (so paid premium prices....). There were many travellers and we were shown to a carriage and secured comfortable seats. The trip was very popular so the train was quite full. There were many volunteers assisting with serving drinks - which were plentiful - along with a sandwich... More
