This isn't a cheap trip but the the scenery is stunning and the live commentary both entertaining and informative. Some of the line crosses old viaducts which look pretty shaky but make for dramatic photos, as do the rivers and the distant mountains. It's quite a long trip and is a 'there and back' trip so try to do a... More

A most unique and nostalgic rail trip with awesome scenery and a mixture of old and new carriages. We travelled in one of the oldest and really enjoyed the experience. The market at Pukerangi was delightful and offered the chance to buy some unique souvenirs.

After arriving in Dunedin we only had 48 hours to enjoy the city. We chose to purchase tickets on the four hour trip and travel on the historic Taieri Gorge Railway. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience which was relaxing after a long day's driving on the previous day. The commentary on the train by Alan was live (not recorded) and... More

We sat in one of the Heritage Cars which made the journey more special. The commentary was both entertaining and informative. The station itself is an incredible building to start your journey from. The scenery as you climb through the gorge and over the bridges is fantastic, though it is quite a lengthy journey there and back.

This trip really is beyond what most people might expect from a heritage railway. From a British perspective it could be compared with the Welsh Highland or North York Moors in some respects except that it is just SO long, SO remote and has such fantastic engineering. It was a real 'trip of a lifetime'. However, I can still understand... More

This completely over priced and a real tourist rip off. The train is nothing special and old in a bad way and not in a good antique interesting kind of way. It's hard to see the viaducts when your on the trains and the only way you can see them is when you have travelled over the bridges and if... More

Excellent trip, comfortable train, very knowledgeable staff. Beautiful photo opportunities. Only shame was, the weather was a bit dismal on our trip. Restaurant car well stocked, yummy food. Good value for money. Shame about the small viewing platform.

The trip is absolutely gorgeous! Beautiful scenery, river views, spectacular gorge and many tunnels and viaducts. BUT: Only the lesser part of the cars are heritage cars, and they provide not only the nice atmosphere but also the opportunity to have a good look: The windows can be opened so that you have a clear view and can take photographs.... This trip gives you a view inland, away from the main populated area's. The trip was informative, but the scenery I felt was slightly disappointing. The volunteers on board each carriage were excellent, providing information and serving food & drink. This is quite a long trip but made more enjoyable by the friendly people that you meet.
