An enjoyable experience although I spent most of the time on the platform at the back of the carriage to get photos. A pleasant 4 hours but was expecting a little better

The idea is a good one but they need work on the actual trip. Cons: the commentary was not very professional at all - and done by someone with a North American accent! To make matters worse he seemed to never shut up and repeated himself on the return trip because we picked up a few new people at the... More

This train trip takes around four hours total to do, taking you from Dunedin railway station (which itself is gorgeous) into Taieri Gorge, and return. In comparison to a lot of tourist things to do in NZ, it's average priced. The gorge is pretty, it'll be more of interest to you if you're into experiencing difficult building feats, as this... We had spent a week driving from one place to another and this was a really lovely and relaxing way to spend an afternoon and be able to take in the views without worry about crashing the car :-) The staff were lovely, helpful and funny. Would recommend.

This trip would only be worthwhile for someone who really likes trains, or for someone who hasn't been to any other river gorge ever. Out of the two hours one way, the train is in the gorge for maybe 20 minutes. While the gorge is pretty, I was disappointed that I had wasted five hours out of my short stay... More

Fantastic excursion from Dunedin Railway Station. For Cruise Ship passengers this is a much more cost effective way of experiencing the sights. However, refrain from ordering the per-ordered $17 Lunch Pack - it was pathetic. You can do much better by purchasing lunch directly on board. Highly recommend the Taieri Gorge Railway Excursion. We took the Railway + Coach journey from Dunedin to Queenstown to avoid the long drive. Once we checked in at the Ticketing Counter, the porter would take care of our luggage until our transfer onto the coach (in our case a minivan). The train journey itself was about 1.5 hours and it was a scenic ride across bridges on... More

Sadly this was not the old fashioned steam train trip I imagined it to be, however it was a great afternoons journey out into the Taieri gorge, crossing the river and the scary viaduct at Wingatui, which the conductor told us an amusing story about how it was named! A running commentary by one of the experienced locals (thanks Julian,... More

If you're in Dunedin for a visit, the Taeiri Gorge train is well worth a visit! You can relax and enjoy the scenery as the instructor gives you a comical introduction to the beautiful otago scenery. You can stand outside the carriages and take photos as you go, and if you're lucky the train driver will stop and let you... More

The train pucked us up at the dock (We were crusing the coast of New Zealand) and took us into the gorge to the end. The secnery was spectacular. Inside the carriage the chairs were set up as tables for four. We were served tea and treats on the way up the gorge and wine with a lovely lunch on... More
