Great trip. Very scenic through the gorge with lots of yellow flowers in bloom and later interesting rock formations and nosy llamas.

This is a great tour of a beautiful gorge. We rated it as a high point of our visit to Dunedin. We purchased the box lunch, but I would recommend you buy the food on the train. You will have more choices. The best picture taking locations are on the platforms between the train cars.

We used the bus/train option. Rode the bus to the turn around point and then the train back to the city. We ordered a box lunch in advance for the train ride and were unaware that there was food for purchase, also. We would have rather chosen our own lunch items, but didn't know that was an option. Also, we... More

Doing this from a cruise ship meant departure from the wharf at Port Chalmers. The first part of the journey through Dunedin is on NZ Govt lines and is the usual unlovely railway land "scenery". There was line work happening so there were several short delays. Then it was on the TGR line, through lush farming country, then on to... More

A great train ride through the gorge! We went up by bus to meet the train and then came back to Dunnedin by the train. We got the best of both worlds, seeing the beautiful scenery by bus and train. The train was delightful with large windows so was great for photography. With the commentary, the conductor with a great... More

while visiting Dunedin on a cruise ship we booked the train independently as the ships charges for this are three times the real cost. the trip up the gorge is outstanding and with the personal commentary provided you miss nothing along the way. also you can stand outside at the end of each carriage for great viewing and photos. on... A wonderful example of early railway engineering to achieve the line up to Pukerangi. The broom in blossom lit up the hillsides and cliff faces to present many photo opportunities of the Taieri River and the railway line. Good commentary and great buffet service available all the way.
