Visitors are taken on guided walking tours through a unique system of trenches and hides to view the penguins undisturbed at close range. Penguin Place is funded 100% by the support of our visitors, this funding enables habitat restoration, predator control, a research programme and on-site rehabilitation for sick, starving and wounded penguins. It is our hope that through our efforts, the future of this rare and wonderful penguin will be assured. « less

With this being a family owned and funded place, with all the trenches to limit intrusion on the Yellow-eyed penguins I think this is wonderful place aimed at conservation and not necessarily profit

The tour was brilliant. You take a minibus over the hill and then walk through a maze of tunnels to various viewing points. You will get to see yellow eyed penguins in very close proximity, however it’s better to go at the end of the day when most of them are back from fishing.

When you get to the Penguin Place, ask when is the best time to see Penguins. Then book that time. This is a great place. The Penguins actually book their hotel reservations at the Penguin Place. Human Visitors pay for this hotel with free health care for the penguins. The more penguins they help the more there is to see.... More

A definite must-see if you're near Dunedin or on the Otago Peninsula! Go in the late afternoon and you'll see the penguins coming home from a day at sea!

This was not only educational but so exciting to see the Yellow Eyed Penguins. Our ticket money goes to look after the penguins, provide them a safe & healthy environment. Very good indeed.

Visiting Penguin Place was very expensive but since we were unlikley to visit New Zealand again, we opted to go there. Its an amazing place and very well organised and delivered by warm-hearted and dedicated staff. A series of partly-covered trenches in the dunes allow you to get so close to the penguins that you can almost touch them, without... More

Best wildlife experience I've been to, got up close to a penguin feeding her young - all from the safety of a hide to avoid disturbing them. Guides are very knowledgeable and add to the visit.

We visited around Easter time (early April) and went on the last tour of the day, around 5.30pm I think. We have 3 children under 8, I was a little nervous as to how the 3 year old would go as it is a long tour. (We had visited here prior to having children so I knew roughly what to... More

Wow! Thanks for the well written review, it really sounds lie you had a fantastic time with the family! We are accommodating with young children and we appreciate how you moved back when they started to make a bit of noise. The kind of viewing is dependent on the time of year, sounds like you struck lots of activity and... More

Another must go if you visit Dunedin. Very intersting place with much information about penguins and even more inportant, it is penguin land. The only way to get close to the pengiuns is in good hidden paths. And we were lucky to see some of the chick, which survived a hot weekend in November 2008. Only 5 of 25 chick... More

A must go if you visit Dunedin! Thanks for taking the time to review your experience from back in 2009. Our operation is still conducted in the same way, and sadly the penguins have had to deal with some very unfortunate circumstances in the past few breeding seasons. In hard times we are able to rehabilitate penguins who are sick,... More

Seems expensive, but well worth the money when you see what is being achieved in conserving the yellow-eyed penguins, and the commitment the owners have to the cause. We had an excellent guide who was clearly committed to the work and very knowledgeable about the plants and other birds as well as the penguins. Well constructed hides and we were... More

A very special experience indeed! Thanks for joining our tour and supporting our project, I understand how you thought it "seemed expensive" but since taking part in the tour you can see first hand where the funding goes- and we do rely 100% on funding from visitors. Our guides are passionate and informative and deliver an overall experience, helping you... More
