Went to visit last week for the second time in four years - I'm glad I went back. The museum is one of the must-sees in Dunedin, the exhibits are fascinating. The butterfly exhibit is worth seeing at least once.

Glad we took the time to visit the museum - loved the butterfly display and then had fun in the hands on scientific room - very interactive and would be a great place to take children. all areas had interesting displays that were not stuffy or boring at all - loved it
a quite superb museum of all aspects of local and national life and history, natural history, ecology, geology, plus collections form elsewhere, i spent a whole day here and only had to leave as my feet were aching, one of the best museums i have ever been to, A1 stuff
This was my first visit to this museum and I was very impressed by the amount and quality of the exhibits. There was so much to see and the butterflies were awesome. Any staff we talked with were knowledgeable and friendly Excellent cafe.
The museum is a great place for me to take my boys on rainy days. The are 4 and 2. They love the Animal Attic the most. We go enjoy the free exhibits. We have not done the Discovery area due to the cost. I love that museums in NZ are free! Great learning experience for my children.
Very well done and fascinating to walk through. Even my husband who does not like museums found it fun and that is amazing!
We brought two children, aged 7 and 2, to the Museum on a wet day in the school holidays and we had a ball. They loved the Discovery area and the Butterfly Experience (be warned, you have to pay in to these parts) and we also looked at every single item in the Animal Attic. The cafe is good too...
