The Dunedin Art Gallery on the Octagon is a city jewel! Very interesting permanent art collection and some beautiful display spaces for unusual fascinating temporary attractions. The gallery cafe adds the cream on the top. Great breakfasts, coffee and lunch. We didn't dine there, but think you could.

I visit the gallery quite regularly these days and love it every single time. There's always something captivating and it's a great varied collection. It's relaxed and welcoming with friendly staff. Easy to get to right in the Octogan. A visit to Dunedin should always include this lovely gallery.

People who write average reviews for this place are ignorant. I think for Dunedin the Public Art Gallery is great compared to other art galleries. I always have a great time at the Art Gallery. The classic features and the staircase are beautiful architecture along with the great Art, makes me feel inspired. Its definitely no Wellington art gallery, but... More

Loved the Frances Hodgkins exhibitions - such diverse examples from throughout her career. Other highlights: Petrus van der Velden, Dayes & Weeks exhibition, Saskia Leek, the 3 paintings by Hotere downstairs and the beauty of the Gallery itself [reminiscent of Charles Rennie Mackintosh design]. All beautifully laid out with interesting notes. Sorry the Matariki exhibition was not quite open -... More

After exploring Dunedin City and the museum by foot, I went into the gallery to have a quick look. It is a pleasant space with a cafe next to it. I notice the section on NZ film archive with some comfortable seats and promptly took up a spot in front of a Mac, putting on some headphones, chose a documentary... More

As far as art galleries are concerned, this was not my best experience...i reckon that Dunedin is culturally rich, but their gallery could offer more. The mural displays of SirFrank Brangwyn were delightful& unusual, which we liked, the pool table was a good touch. I also enjoyed the Asian art had me intrigued as well. Come to think, actually, go... More

I liked that it was very near to the drop off point in the center of town in which the Celebrity Solstice Cruise Ship arranged for a fee. There were really no Art on display when I went inside.

I cannot imagine visiting a city and not checking some of it's art venues out. The Dunedin Public Art Gallery is a wonderful space to get lost and inspired. It's free, so you have really no excuse. Just step in and be stirred :) Even if you only have 30 minutes, it is worth a visit, but you could easily... More
