All you need in such a small town

We stayed overnight on our way from Queenstown to Mt.Cook village. It has 2 supermarkets, a bottle shop and good coffee shop.

Twizel is an Alpine Village situated in the Mackenzie District in the South Island of New Zealand. It is on route from Christchurch to Queenstown. Google for yourself and see all the amazing things it has to offer for people and families of all age groups. We regularly drive from Christchurch to stay here and never tire of the amazing... More

I think any town that can turn heavy earthmoving vehicles into a children's playground is worth visiting. I stayed in Twizel towards the end of autumn (I stayed there and drove to Wanaka for the Warbirds show). If you're feeling jaded and in need of a break, Twizel hits the spot nicely; Lake Tekapo in one direction (fairly close to)... More

I liked it, was a good place for me to recharge after three days in Queenstown. Very quiet town, good for a look out at Mount Cook just outside the centre. I got the impression there are now mostly just holiday homes there, but nice to see a small town that isn't touristy too.

A real community feel, if you want to see a proper place where real people live work and socialise this is one of the many friendly places in the island, we loved it very much and stayed there one night in our camper..

If you like fishing or want to try fishing this is a great area. The canals all around the hydro are stocked with salmon and you can get fishing gear, a licence and information at the outdoor shops in Twizel. It is best with a car to get to the fishing spots but there is are a couple close enough... More

We stayed 1 night at twizel and that was 1 night too many. I had booked a lord of the rings tours which left from twizel. unfortunately, this ended up being cancelled due to a death in the family. mountain chalets were the most expensive accommodation on our 6 week south island tour. it cost $175.00 for basic accommodation. will... A few places to get some food while travelling past, not a lot here, not a lot to do or see. A couple of nice flat walks that are sign posted some of the way round, minigolf isn't bad. Close to a couple of the hydro lakes so if you weren't camping you may be able to rent a house... More

We stopped here for a break while travelling to Lake Tekapo. The town is fairly spread out and on a flat plain near Mt Cook. The tourist info is very helpful and there are toilet facilities and quite a lot of shops to get food

Twizel is a place near to nowhere that had a lot of vacant houses, so a number of people went there to live and worked hard to create a community again. It's no worse than a thousand USA small towns, but ...
