Description: The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and...
The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From the comfort of world class carriages you'll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech rainforest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature state award winning carriages including panoramic side and sky-view windows, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, and open air viewing decks. The TranzAlpine operates a daily return service throughout the year.

We took the TranzAlpine Train from Christchurch to Greymouth and it was one of the highlites of our New Zealand trip. Spectacular mountains, gorges and amazing railway bridges. Make sure you catch this train.

Fabulous trip. We did it and stopped overnight in Greymouth. Wouldn't have been as good if done in one day. Scenery is spectacular, commentary is very interesting and engaging. Staff are brilliant, and constantly coming around with rubbish bags and cleaning up. We did it in Winter so wasn't as busy as could be, but still there is plenty of... More

We spent two weeks touring the South Island in a camper van and this transalpine trip was my number one. Awesome awesome awesome views, a great train.....warm, clean, viewing carriage, restaurant buffet carriage with lovely food, yummy cheeses and fab coffees. Staff are very professional and the commentary is a must. We loved this and only went as far as... More

Fantastic. comfortable train ride with amazing views! I really appreciated the headphones and the cultural and natural history information. It was so roomy and relaxing. The large windows provided lots of opportunities for photos.

It does not matter whether you start in Christchurch or Greymouth, just make sure you do this trip. The carriages are modern and swish with excellent panoramic windows. The observation car at the end of the train is open to the elements but gives you a great vantage point to fill your memory card with a some amazing panoramas of... More

This is a fantastic train trip, the scenery is awesome as all NZ is. I would love to do this again in winter, breathtaking beautiful I'm told. We went from Christchurch to Greymouth and back. The viaducts are cool. Highly recommend this trip.

From the Canterbury Plains and onto the threaded route through the Main Divide this train journey has it all. The scenery is ever-changing and whether you choose to sit in the comfort of the new-style carriages or periodically make your way to the viewing carriage you will be amazed at the views as the train traverses from the east coast... I went during winter - breathtaking views with snow everywhere throughout the alps. The whole train ride was relaxing and comfortable with beautiful views. The food wasn't the best and overpriced, that was it's only downfall. But the trip more than made up for it.
