Description: KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger...
KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train operator. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington. KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

As a New Zealander I have always wanted to do this trip and I am so glad that I did. The train was comfortable and the viewing carriage was fantastic. We got to enjoy stunning scenery with a commentary which was very informative. I couldn't believe that we could see dolphins from the train and it was not just one... More

Taking the train from Christchurch to Picton was a real treat and allowed my wife and I to enjoy the sights along NZ's North Island's East coast, without the bother of driving. It also was a wonderful departure from the tour buses that we used, where the trips can easily exceed 4 to 5 hours, or longer as in Queenstown... More

The scenery is varied and lovely, the carriages are clean and comfortable and the check-in, luggage handling and food service was efficient. We loved the trip. The reason I took off one star is for KiwiRail's ticket pricing practices. If you book online from within New Zealand, you can see a range of fares which includes some special discount options.... This would have been fantastic but being one hour late was not good. We went through some amazing scenery along the coast and saw a seal colony. The train was comfortable with a dining car for light snacks and an open carriage for photos and fresh air. Well worth the trip for the scenery

This is an enjoyable trip by rail. Around a third of the route goes alongside the Pacific Ocean and this is perhaps the most scenic and interesting. We were lucky in having another superb summer day (as has been the case on every day of our trip so far). It was good that the luggage was put separately, in fact... More

I really enjoyed taking the trip, as my previous trip here, I was the driver so unable to take in the wondrous sights of of the coastline going up to Picton. Like other other tourist trains, there is the rear open air carriage which is a must for taking stunning holiday photographs. The trains are busy during the Summer, so... More

First of all I must correct the previous reviewer - the train travels along the northern part of the east coast of the South Island - not the west coast. You are looking at the Pacific Ocean. We boarded at Picton and were very well received at the railway station but I am glad we had not come straight from... More

Checked-out early in the morning from Sudima Airport Hotel which is located near to the train station to catch the 7.00 am train to Picton, the northern tip of South Island. We arrived at around 6.30 am. Luggage checked-in was fast as the staffs handling our luggage are very professional in their job. We boarded the Coastal Pacific train and... More

I was really looking forward to this part of my recent trip to New Zealand. I have travelled the coast between Christchurch and Picton in my younger days and knew how scenic it is. Check-in took place at a much smaller Christchurch Railway station than I remembered. At 06:40am we were able to get out tickets with our online pre-puchased... More

We were lucky enough to book a return journey on this train leaving one day and returning the next. We had seats on the coast side of the train facing the engine this enabled us to see the grape vines the livestock and the seals .At times there are dolphins and whales on view in the ocean! The train is... More
