We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington. KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth. « less

one day journey from Chch to Picton, and then by ferry to Wellington, without the commitment of driving the car for hundreds of km. Spectacular view from the windows and from the open wagon were you can take photos. seats are the ones of a standard 2nd class, not very comfortable. Lunch and snacks are great, at reasonable prices, and... More

Devote a day taking this wonderful train, one of the best rail journeys in the world, through to the West Coast and see engineering feats, fantastic views of rugged NZ scenery and listen to an excellent commentary. At Cass look at the "station" and remember Rita Angus's great painting of Cass! I recommend this trip for any train lover and... More

Our Interislander Ferry was running a few minutes late so we had a quick walk to the Picton train station and boarded out train immediately, luckily all our luggage had been transferred without a problem. We have driven on the Christchurch to Picton road before and so it was a sheer delight to just sit back and take in all... More

We checked our booking at Picton station on arrival from North Island on the ferry in March only to be told that the train was not running for at least a few days because of mechanical failure. It might be running in 4 days time when we had booked for but it might not. If not there was a bus... More

The train is very comfortable, but turn up and go hasn't yet hit NZ Railways. We sat around in the waiting room (at the crack of dawn) with the train in the platform and a man tinkering on his computer behind a wire screen for half an hour. We could have had another half an hour in bed or been... More

Great scenery. Clean carriages with very helpful staff. Very interesting and worthwhile train trip. We did the worst first (TransAlpine) then did this one and it was so much better. Highly recommended.

I have traveled on this train and the connecting ferry a number of times and enjoyed every trip, even in the rain, although it is better on a sunny day. Sometimes the train is so close to the sea, you can watch the surfers riding the waves. For parts of the route the road and rail run parallel, but there... More

My husband and I decided to take a train journey for our anniversary so traveled from Picton to Christchurch with a stopover in Kaikoura. The train journey itself was fantastic. It had clean toilets, ample plug points for charging of our devices, comfortable seating and tables and a good selection of food and drink. It was great to sit back,... More

British operators could learn a thing or two from Kiwi Rail spotlessly clean outside and In. All the trains we travelled on in New Zealand were fairly new rolling stock and the windows were always crystal clean. The food offer was simple but good value and we pre-booked our meals online when we booked our tickets.Again my wife was in... More
