Type: Scenic Railroads, Outdoors
Owner description: KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train operator. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington. KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

Lovely trip up the coast to Blenheim, such a nice way to travel with lovely service from the staff. Was nice and easy from booking, to check in and boarding. Loved that we can bring our own food with us, and liquor was affordable. I would highly recommend travellign this train route at least once, great way to take in... More

We travelled on this train with a stop-over at Kaikoura fo whale-watching. Great way to experience NZ countryside without all the fuss of driving and the chance to enjoy a glass of wine as well. Good service and ran on time.

We had a great trip on the train worth every penny as the scenery is just spectacular and you get a great commentary . It started off a bit difficult as there was a problem with the railway at the top end near Picton and we had a short trip in a bus from there bypassing that issue to another... More

Value for money, I thought. $80 gets you a one-way five-hour trip from Christchurch to Picton via the whale watching town of Kaikoura. The open air carriage at the back was where I spent most of the trip taking photos. When we approached the Kaikoura region, we ran into tunnels and it was very interesting. We had a brief stop... I booked a return from Chistchurch to Kaikoura (for the whale watching). Train left on time but was eventually about 20 minutes late into Kaikoura. It stopped for nearly everything and was SO slow when moving that road based HGV lorries were whizzing past us. I later calculated that we averaged 37 miles per hour with only 2 planned stops.... We joined this train up the coast after whale watching, and the first part if the trip was very stunning coastal scenery. It did give way pretty quickly to inland rail through farms and eventually city. We enjoyed the train ride, but if you could only do one do the tranzalpine as it is far superior.

Staff were friendly, train travelled thru some stunning scenery but was a very slow journey. Got a bit boring after 5 hours as train was late.

We were booked on this from Picton by our agent who didn't realise the train stopped at Blenheim. As we stayed in Blenheim for two nights, it made sense for us to rearrange our ticket, easily done by phone. The train travels through much of the Marlborough valley and you see some of the great Sauvignon areas. The route then... More

We took the Coastal Pacific train from Picton to Christchurch after crossing from Wellington on the Interislander. We loved this train, it had it all. We found the seats comfortable and roomy, the service excellent, the cabins clean, and the viewing windows were fantastic for appreciating the first rate scenery. The only downside was the timing, we left about 10min... More

We booked this as part of a package which included the Northern Explorer and Interislander Ferry and it was lovely. Seats are comfortable and roomy and the open carriage where you take photos is quite spacious especially when there is a coachload of passengers all wanting to use it. We saw fur seals on the beaches and snow capped mountains.... More
