Description: KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger...
KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train operator. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington. KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

We crossed on the ferry on the most perfect morning and enjoyed the short transfer to the station thanks to the humorous bus driver. An hour to spare before the train departed. Check in and... oh dear, the tickets are for the following month - my mistake!! No panic - the friendly staff set about contacting the office to rearrange.... More

If you're expecting a high-speed inter-city rail journey you will be disappointed! This journey is not designed to get from a to b quickly, but is a kick back and relaxed way of enjoying the stunning views of New Zealand's south island's north eastern Pacific coastline. The coaches are modern and air conditioned, with panoramic windows and a commentary provided... More

We took the train from Picton to Christchurch, straight from the ferry crossing from the North Island. We were delighted to see that we were able to check-in our luggage at the Wellington ferry terminal and have it transferred onto the Coastal train - worth bearing in mind if you're travelling from the ferry. The train ran a little late,... More

We waited an hour and a half at the Blenheim Rail Station and were advised that this is not at all uncommon. A problem with the Signals we were told. We enjoyed a coffee and cake at the pleasant railway cafe while we waited. The trip was well worth it the wait. The vineyards were looking their best. The coastline... More

It is one of those train trips than one should have on their list to do at least once. Husband and I loved the trip, it was a fine day and the scenery was great.

Beautiful train ride, one of my favorite experiences in NZ so far. I saw fur seals and dolphins in the ocean plus many sheep, cows and even deer in the surrounding farmlands. I sat near 12 kiwi rail enthusiasts who were very funny and nice, and even they were impressed with the historical information on the free optional narrated commentary... More

The KiwiRail Scenic Coastal Pacific train is a lesser-known attraction that we highly recommend. We took the Interislander Ferry to Picton, had a nice lunch in the harbor, then got on the small and very well-run Coastal Pacific train. The cars are designed for sight-seeing with big windows and roof windows, so you have a very comfortable and beautiful ride.... More

We had reservations for travel from Picton to Christchurch. Because of mechanical problems, train service throughout the South Island was cancelled. Thankfully(???) KiwiRail provided coaches to transport us passengers to Christchurch. The coach we rode in was driven by an old, disheveled man whose competence and appearance I questioned. I doubt if he knew how to operate the climate control... More

As a New Zealander I have always wanted to do this trip and I am so glad that I did. The train was comfortable and the viewing carriage was fantastic. We got to enjoy stunning scenery with a commentary which was very informative. I couldn't believe that we could see dolphins from the train and it was not just one... More
