Description: KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger...
KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train operator. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington. KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

One of many train journeys that highlight the magnificent scenery in NZ. With stunning coastal views on one side, with the track literally running alongside the water's edge, and mountains on the other, this is a lovely way to travel - we went from Picton to Kaikoura. The open carriage gives you the opportunity to take some magnificent photos, and... More

A beautiful way to see New Zealand. The train has comfortable seats and gives opportunities for photography it has a coach which is open for people to be close to nature we took it from kaikora which gives view of the coast and then it moves inland

I had to get from Rangiora to Blenheim to pick up an aeroplane. The train proved a great option. Reasonably priced and it stopped at Rangiora on the route from Christchurch to Picton. The carriages were very good quality and the food and service was great. The train track route provides a different perspective of the coast from the road.... More

Travelled between Picton and Kaikoura, relaxed and enjoyed the varied coastal scenery, the many tunnels and the rugged beauty of the area adjacent the rail line. Spotted seals basking on the rocks and a large pod of dolphins. Very enjoyable trip as the speed is leisurely.

We crossed on the ferry on the most perfect morning and enjoyed the short transfer to the station thanks to the humorous bus driver. An hour to spare before the train departed. Check in and... oh dear, the tickets are for the following month - my mistake!! No panic - the friendly staff set about contacting the office to rearrange.... More

If you're expecting a high-speed inter-city rail journey you will be disappointed! This journey is not designed to get from a to b quickly, but is a kick back and relaxed way of enjoying the stunning views of New Zealand's south island's north eastern Pacific coastline. The coaches are modern and air conditioned, with panoramic windows and a commentary provided... More

We took the train from Picton to Christchurch, straight from the ferry crossing from the North Island. We were delighted to see that we were able to check-in our luggage at the Wellington ferry terminal and have it transferred onto the Coastal train - worth bearing in mind if you're travelling from the ferry. The train ran a little late,... More

We waited an hour and a half at the Blenheim Rail Station and were advised that this is not at all uncommon. A problem with the Signals we were told. We enjoyed a coffee and cake at the pleasant railway cafe while we waited. The trip was well worth it the wait. The vineyards were looking their best. The coastline... More

It is one of those train trips than one should have on their list to do at least once. Husband and I loved the trip, it was a fine day and the scenery was great.

Beautiful train ride, one of my favorite experiences in NZ so far. I saw fur seals and dolphins in the ocean plus many sheep, cows and even deer in the surrounding farmlands. I sat near 12 kiwi rail enthusiasts who were very funny and nice, and even they were impressed with the historical information on the free optional narrated commentary... More
