Description:

KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger...

KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train operator. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington.

KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

What a great way to travel the top half of the east coast of our South Island. Just sit back & enjoy the view through the huge windows. Don't have to worry about traffic. Learn history about places that we usually drive through. I would recommend the trip.

I caught the ferry from Wellington and then train from Picton to Christchurch. A good way to go; plenty of time to relax, no worries about driving, arrived in Chch refreshed. I purchased a through-fare so suitcase was checked through to Chch at the Wellington terminal. Friends of mine had an overnight stop in Picton, which was also enjoyable. The... More

I took the Kiwi Rail Scenic Train Journey all the way from Arthur's Pass to Christchurch, to Picton, and Wellington to Auckland. The Train is very comfortable, the open viewing deck is excellent. Friendly and good service. Nice restaurant With good selection of Food and drink.

Everyone should take the time to view the Kaikora Coast. The train beats a car every time on this section of coast. For one thing the train follows the coast for longer, nearly 100km in all, and for another, you can watch the view without worrying about the driver. The train departed exactly on time from Christchurch and arrived early... More

We travelled from Christchurch to Wellington which included the ferry crossing. Luggage is checked in all the way to the ferry terminal in Wellington which made things very simple. The train leaves Christchurch at the crack of dawn - 7am and you have to be there 20 mins ahead of departure to load bags. Seats are allocated and are comfortable... More

My mother and 11 year old son have just done this and both absolutely loved it. The scenery is amazing with lots of tunnels and a great view of the coast line. Fantastic commentating throughout the journey and my son was full of knowledge.

The train journey is well worthwhile . Just sit back and take in the magnificent views or take a walk to the open viewing car and take some serious videos or photos . Grab your self a brew and a snack from the buffet car . Listen to the commentary through the head phones supplied . The crew is most... More

This is a great way to get from Picton to Christchurch. It's a leisurely run up the coast with an accompanying descriptive narrative should you so wish,(through head phones)but the observation coach, all standing, is open to all and you can watch and wave to the lonely beaches and the farmers rounding up their sheep with their collies. Everyone waves as... More

This was a beautiful experience from Christchurch to the West Coast. The scenery was spectacular! We were impressed with the staff - very friendly & knowledgeable. Roomy seating and comfortable with large windows to take in the view. There is also an open air viewing car that one could walk out to for a brisk break from sitting. The food... More

Great service, train was very comfortable and food was surprising good! Pre ordering is a good idea to ensure you get what you want but there was still some good options. Views were good even on a rainy day. Also has an open air viewing cart. Carriage C was inbetween viewing cart and cafe cart which was great. The right... More
