Description: KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger...
KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train operator. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington. KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

It is one of those train trips than one should have on their list to do at least once. Husband and I loved the trip, it was a fine day and the scenery was great.

Beautiful train ride, one of my favorite experiences in NZ so far. I saw fur seals and dolphins in the ocean plus many sheep, cows and even deer in the surrounding farmlands. I sat near 12 kiwi rail enthusiasts who were very funny and nice, and even they were impressed with the historical information on the free optional narrated commentary... More

The KiwiRail Scenic Coastal Pacific train is a lesser-known attraction that we highly recommend. We took the Interislander Ferry to Picton, had a nice lunch in the harbor, then got on the small and very well-run Coastal Pacific train. The cars are designed for sight-seeing with big windows and roof windows, so you have a very comfortable and beautiful ride.... More

We had reservations for travel from Picton to Christchurch. Because of mechanical problems, train service throughout the South Island was cancelled. Thankfully(???) KiwiRail provided coaches to transport us passengers to Christchurch. The coach we rode in was driven by an old, disheveled man whose competence and appearance I questioned. I doubt if he knew how to operate the climate control... More

As a New Zealander I have always wanted to do this trip and I am so glad that I did. The train was comfortable and the viewing carriage was fantastic. We got to enjoy stunning scenery with a commentary which was very informative. I couldn't believe that we could see dolphins from the train and it was not just one... More

Taking the train from Christchurch to Picton was a real treat and allowed my wife and I to enjoy the sights along NZ's North Island's East coast, without the bother of driving. It also was a wonderful departure from the tour buses that we used, where the trips can easily exceed 4 to 5 hours, or longer as in Queenstown... More

The scenery is varied and lovely, the carriages are clean and comfortable and the check-in, luggage handling and food service was efficient. We loved the trip. The reason I took off one star is for KiwiRail's ticket pricing practices. If you book online from within New Zealand, you can see a range of fares which includes some special discount options.... This would have been fantastic but being one hour late was not good. We went through some amazing scenery along the coast and saw a seal colony. The train was comfortable with a dining car for light snacks and an open carriage for photos and fresh air. Well worth the trip for the scenery

This is an enjoyable trip by rail. Around a third of the route goes alongside the Pacific Ocean and this is perhaps the most scenic and interesting. We were lucky in having another superb summer day (as has been the case on every day of our trip so far). It was good that the luggage was put separately, in fact... More
