Type: Scenic railroads, Sightseeing Tours
Owner description: KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train operator. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington. KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

I really enjoyed taking the trip, as my previous trip here, I was the driver so unable to take in the wondrous sights of of the coastline going up to Picton. Like other other tourist trains, there is the rear open air carriage which is a must for taking stunning holiday photographs. The trains are busy during the Summer, so... More

First of all I must correct the previous reviewer - the train travels along the northern part of the east coast of the South Island - not the west coast. You are looking at the Pacific Ocean. We boarded at Picton and were very well received at the railway station but I am glad we had not come straight from... More

Checked-out early in the morning from Sudima Airport Hotel which is located near to the train station to catch the 7.00 am train to Picton, the northern tip of South Island. We arrived at around 6.30 am. Luggage checked-in was fast as the staffs handling our luggage are very professional in their job. We boarded the Coastal Pacific train and... More

I was really looking forward to this part of my recent trip to New Zealand. I have travelled the coast between Christchurch and Picton in my younger days and knew how scenic it is. Check-in took place at a much smaller Christchurch Railway station than I remembered. At 06:40am we were able to get out tickets with our online pre-puchased... More

We were lucky enough to book a return journey on this train leaving one day and returning the next. We had seats on the coast side of the train facing the engine this enabled us to see the grape vines the livestock and the seals .At times there are dolphins and whales on view in the ocean! The train is... More

Our trip on the coastal pacific was combined with a ferry ride from Wellington to Picton. A lovely style to see another way of the journey from Picton to Christchurch - great friendly staff with a good buffet car on the train to provide a variety of nibbles to while away the stress free ride. Well worth doing, and I... More

Clean train which went at a good speed to enable you to see the stunning coast. The staff in the café were really chatty. All very well organised - just remember to get tags on your cases especially if you are going onto the ferry.

The views were amazing - the voice over was great. I loved the entire experience except probably for the breakfast which was a bit small.

This was a fantastic trip. Our family took advantage of the deal including the ferry from Wellington and had two stopovers, one in Picton and one in Kaikoura. The staff were friendly and helpful. The facilities were excellent, clean and spacious. The open viewing car made it feel like a real train journey. The only negative was the toilets were... More

If you are going from either Christchurch to Picton or Picton to Christchurch this is a must. We travelled on the 27th November 2014 even through it was a 5hr 15 min train trip you didn't notice it as there was so much to see. The scenery was magnificent lots to see. From the ocean, mountains, snow capped mountains, rivers,... More
