Such a beautiful place! Amazing for those reflective photos! I recommend going early, probably between 7:30 - 8:30am. Why? I did some research before going and other reviews recommended going in the morning as there would be less wind. This was true. It was a clear sky, no wind and very very few people. Come 9am onward and we found... More

We'll sign posted. Went approx 9ish plenty of parking and bathroom facilities. Easy flat walking. Wasn't prepared for such a spectacular mirror picture perfect lake. The walk times do seem to be over estimated but depends on your pace. Various look out points along the way. Tranquil atmosphere. Great cafe for after your walk. Put this on your bucket list.

Prior to doing this walk I did a bit of research on what would be the best time of day for reflection photos. Most of the website detailing this spot suggest either dawn or dusk, however I disagree and sugges that a better time would be between the hours of 8am to 10am. Reason I suggest this is that going... We enjoyed a wonderful walk around Lake Matheson which can be done easily in an hour not the hour and 25 minutes the boards suggest. Even though the Lake had some ripples, we still managed to get some lovely mirror like photographs with the alps in the background. We did the walk before breakfast while staying at a nearby B... We went for a walk around this lake as we had a couple of hours of free time in the evening and found it very enjoyable. There are various look out points which offer wonderful views of the lake. The lake itself was like a mirror lake which reflected the scenery around perfectly. We had some great photos from this... More

Located in the vast Westland Tai Poutini National Park, Lake Matheson is an icon of the west coast of New Zealand's South Island - famous for its mirror refections of New Zealand's highest peaks, Aoraki (Mount Cook) and Rarakiroa (Mount Tasman). Best seen at sunrise or sunset - when the wind drops off and the waters of the lake are... More

The views you get on this walk really are quite spectacular! Try and go on a calm day though, the reflections of Mount Cook are better the smoother the water is. We did the full circuit walk (the map indicates a few different walks but it's really just part of the circuit with a return, might as well do the... More

Whilst backpacking solo around New Zealand I got up before sunrise to visit Lake Matheson with a couple of others from the hostel I was staying in. After a short ten minute walk through the dark forest, we approached a viewing platform where, quite literally, one of the most awe-inspiring and incredible views lay in front of me. All of... More
