This is a nice bay, but not stunning by New Zealand standards. The Scorch-o-rama cafe is possibly the main attraction on the strip, where many of the cast of the Hobbit trilogy used to come for a coffee or a quick lunch in between shooting.

Island Bay for tide pools; Lyall Bay for dogs, walking, and surfing; and Scorching Bay for sand castles and swimming. A bit harder to get to on public transit.

Scorching bay has been around for decades and remains an excellent place to visit in summer with hot days and golden sand. Get there early, it can be very busy.

A glorious beach cafe on a still sunny day. Never disappoints and sells icecreams for the kids. A safe beach with rocks to climb, seagulls to chase and great coffee with fine food. My Mum's old favourite.

There's a great café opposite which sells ice cream in cones for reasonable prices including the NZ favourite hokey pokey. There is grass to sit on and a sandy beach and rockpools to investigate for kids and when you get too hot you can swim there too.

The beaches in Welington is truly stunning - no other places can beat it on a good day. Its off Shelley bay which is great to drive around if you are near the airport and can stop for a quick coffee or two along the drive. Highly recommended!!!

On the 'back side' , away from the city, is this nice stretch of beach. On a day that was blustery, it was a pleasantly 'temperate' and protected.place to look for sea shells.

We went on a windy but sunny day and it was still great. It was part of a day driving around and we went to the great cafe there- packed. Excellent public toilets as ll plus a play ground. A nice place to stretch your legs and have a play in the sheltered water. I suspect it is a busy... More

Sunny day visit only as it can be a bit exposed if blustery. And try not to go during school holidays as it gets quite popular. It's a sheltered bay, a bit of a sandy stretch, with rockpools and bird life either end. Water is always inviting. Great views across the natural harbour entrance to the Rimutaka hills. Nothing quite... More
