On one of Wellingtons calmest days ever we took our Japanese guest on a walk to the top. He struggled at times on the steep track but the views took his breath away more than the climb. Go prepared with good walking shoes and take a water bottle and don't forget your camera. This has been the highlight of our... More

There's a great walk to the gun emplacements and lots of things to look at along the way. It takes a while to drive there from Wellington and the road is windy and steep in parts but the drive is worth it.

It's wild and untamed. If you like your beaches pristine with sand and lifesavers stay away! This place has atmosphere and and a slightly menacing aura, especially in a northerly. My favourite beach of all time.

You can only get to Makara Beach by car through Johnsonville or Karori. It's worth the drive - a rugged beach - stones not sand. Great for walking, exploring rock pools and if you hike up the hill (10-15 minutes) the views out to the Cook Strait and across to the Kaikoura ranges are absolutely magnificent. Popular with divers looking... More

Once I got to the top I was plenty happy to have turned mountain goat for a couple of hours to do this walk. On a clear day the uninterrupted views across Cook Straight to the Kaikoura Ranges is not to be missed! The cliffs are breathtaking - but it is a challenging track so leave your vertigo at home... If your ideal beach does not contain sand, but rocks, then this beach is ideal for you! It's quite a distance from Wellington City. There is a walking path (not sure where it leads to), so this may be good for those that love to walk

Awesome beach - would love another cafe or something out there. Beautiful stones, nice place to 'get away'.

Just like any other New Zealand beach most beaches are pretty much the same. Nice to be able to sit by the water and enjoying the company of your family and watching the world go by...

Great beach and beautiful views. Been coming to NZ and haven't been to this place. What a sight. I really enjoyed sitting on the stoney beach and looking into the ocean with my friend Woiwoi and Ron even looking into the yellow Gorse wild flowers filled hillside. Just beatiful.

No good for swimming or surfing, it is home for paua poachers. The beach is a shingle beach with minimal amenities.
