Architectural historian Nicholas Pevsner saw New Zealand in 1958 and thought there was no town planning in New Zealand. In today's district plan for Wellington a guiding principle of development is that the quality of the public realm should be influenced by the buildings and structures that define it. This is achieved in the evolution of the buildings and structures... More

It is all others have said it to be, it is a pleasant space well designed and interesting. We were lucky as when we were there a stage had been erected and bands and cultural performers entertained whist us tourist sat on bean bags in the sun just chilling. The library is there and maybe worth checking if anything is... More

At some point you'll stumble across this square if your a visitor to the area. Although it's a sizeable open space there is nothing inspiring in the architecture.

Great sunny spot to eat lunch and people watch. Library and City Gallery worth a visit too. Make sure you have your sunglasses!

Worth a look at the sculptures if you're passing through on a sunny day. Otherwise it is a rather windswept and soulless open area between council buildings.

I crossed Civic Square several times during my visit, and every time I appreciated the bright, elegant sculpture that seems to float into the air. Inspired by the national simbol of New Zealand Neil Dawson created an amazing, alien sphere of silver ferns, strange and befitting in the same time. Very beautiful, and you just have to look up to... We came across this area by accident. We were staying in the locality and went for a walk. From an alleyway entrance we came out into a vista of buildings, artworks and the harbour. To many thing to witness to mention here but do make an effort to do this area. You will not be disappointed (unless it is raining)... More

We went there on a beautiful day with blue sky and light wind - unusual for Wellington lol. The architecture was stunning, especially with the blue sky in the background. A good place for little picnic. Also a great view to the harbour.

They say you can't beat wellington on a nice day. It's true. The civic sq on a nice day has all kinds of interesting people. And as you stand in the center, you can turn 360 degrees and see beautiful buildings everywhere. The library is a great structure as is the free and usually interesting City Gallery, and the Town... One of Wellington's many nooks that has nice places to sit and eat your lunch! It often has events or promotions in the square as well as the odd protester! It's also a great way to get to/from the waterfront.
