It's convenient going to the botanical gardens to take the cable car, but it's nothing special. it is a short trip and the scenery is more than average.
Wait time to get on the cable car is long with cruise ships in the city, but worth the wait for the experience. Cost is low and you can go one way (which we did-up) and walk through the Botanical gardens down, or take the cable car back down. There is a small museum at the top of the hill.... More
Lovely ride. Great customer service. If you want to walk around the botanical gardens (where the cable car goes to) I would recommend buying a single ride and walk back down, as to walk back to the cable car would entail very steep uphill walking. To walk around the gardens, you are walking downhill anyway, and it spits you out... More
Recently, getting on the cable car has been like playing Russian roulette. If you manage to get on when it's working, arriving at your destination without it breaking down is a risk not unlike gambling. For some it could be quite exciting in that respect! Sure, it'll start up again, but by that stage it would have been quicker to... More
The drivers are friendly. The view going to the top is stunning. The movement is slow, so people can take time enjoying the scenes along the way. Note that it can be really crowded and a long line waiting in the hot season.
I wasn't really impressed with the cable car, it was ok, but it wasn't as long a ride as I thought it would be. Plus they were doing renovations at the top which didn't add to my experience. Its worth doing but I didn't think it was highly riveting. Its nice to get the "postcard" photo from the top as... More
A simple, fun, easy and cheap way to get from the city to the gardens. I liked the character of the old cars and the laid back travel style. It is a short journey and for the price - why not. It can be tricky to find (despite the rather obvious sign) if you are distracted by the shops and... More
The cable car was a bit difficult to find. It is a relatively short, but enjoyable ride, to the top of the hill from which you get a pretty good view of Wellington and the surrounding area. One can walk back to town through the botanical garden from the lookout
If you did not know what you were looking for, you'd be excused for missing the entrance of the Cable Car Terminal on Lambton Quay, Wellington. Situated down a dark passageway sitting amongst the 'golden mile' shops we found the modern earthquake proof terminal building, all shiny and new and then heard the grinding noise of a cable running through...
