Owner description: Be embraced by the beauty of this gorgeous wooden cathedral - still sacred, welcoming to all, in the heart of Wellington's heritage precinct. Breathtakingly beautiful - Wellington's famous Old St Paul's, constructed entirely of native timbers, is one of New Zealand's greatest heritage places. Experience the wonderful and sometimes quirky stories of this former cathedral church, its historic location and its people. Gaze at Old St Paul's unique colonial architecture, admire its exquisite embroidered furnishings and be awed by the colours of its beautiful stained glass windows. It is a magnificent example of timber Gothic Revival architecture. The site where Old St Paul's stands was formerly part of Pipitea Pa. For almost 100 years, Old St Paul's served as the parish church of Thorndon and the Anglican Cathedral of Wellington. It remains a place of spiritual significance to many and also has become a popular venue for a wide variety of cultural events.

While this is a special piece of architecture and well worth a look in at, the staff made me feel very uncomfortable, as if I was doing something wrong being there. My idea of "sacred" is "a happy and safe place". Not sure they felt the same way :-)

Walked in on the choir practising which was wonderful to hear invited to walk around and to visit the lady chapel which is amazing how it could have been moved and placed where it now is.

A lovely old church, full of interesting hisotical information and artifacts. A great small shop with old fashioned toys. Unpreposesing and charming, and if you are lucky you may be there when the bells are rung.

We chose to finish our walking tour of Wellington at old St Paul's. A painted and rather uninspiring exterior had me totally unprepared for the experience of walking through the doors. This is the only example of Gothic revival architecture built entirely of wood that I have ever seen. The rich natural colours of the timber and the absence of... More

Lovely church. the various woods used for the interior were of particular interest. I was also interested in learning about the visits by American troops during World War II.

Magnificent and that's just all the wood inside. then theres the stained glass, beautiful. really this is a venue to die for. good loos outside so will handle 200. park across the road at the shopping centre. only negative is you need to organise another venue for the party. but this is a great place for the vows :-) Mike

What a beautiful church! We spent about an hour here just looking around at all the windows and the history behind it. The lady there was very helpful and informative. Parking is a little tricky as there is only street parking, but definitely worth it!

It's a pleasure to see... In an area where old things from an european point of view don't seem that old, this is a real nice spot to visit.

Surrounded by the ever-increasing concrete jungle of Wellington's high-rise government buildings, lovely little Old St Paul's is a perfect antidote for the rush and stress of the world just outside its doors, and a complete contrast to the garish new and very much bigger St Paul's Cathedral just a block or two away. A nice place to visit for some... More

Generally I'm not big on visiting churches but this one is well worth the visit. Its an amazing building both inside and out and the staff are friendly and very knowledgeable regarding its history.
