Owner description: Be embraced by the beauty of this gorgeous wooden cathedral - still sacred, welcoming to all, in the heart of Wellington's heritage precinct. Breathtakingly beautiful - Wellington's famous Old St Paul's, constructed entirely of native timbers, is one of New Zealand's greatest heritage places. Experience the wonderful and sometimes quirky stories of this former cathedral church, its historic location and its people. Gaze at Old St Paul's unique colonial architecture, admire its exquisite embroidered furnishings and be awed by the colours of its beautiful stained glass windows. It is a magnificent example of timber Gothic Revival architecture. The site where Old St Paul's stands was formerly part of Pipitea Pa. For almost 100 years, Old St Paul's served as the parish church of Thorndon and the Anglican Cathedral of Wellington. It remains a place of spiritual significance to many and also has become a popular venue for a wide variety of cultural events.

This is well worth a stop while in Wellington. The church is wooden and it's beautiful. We couldn't stay long as there was a concert starting a few minutes after we got in, but it was nice to have gone and seen this church.

Amazing to think that this wonderful building was going to be knocked down in the 60s when the new Cathedral began to be used. So good that it was kept for the nation. It's a place of peace and calm, with lots of stories told us by an informative Heritage New Zealand steward. Being Christmas, there was a little gift... More

Cruise ship passengers find Old St Paul's a fascination and a place for reflection spending some quiet time. Located near to Parliament Buildings in Thorndon, it is a mere 5 minutes walk from the northern end of Lambton Quay and the railway station. A worthwhile hour or two takes in the Parliament (free hourly tours), St Paul's and the old... More

Although it is small it has a great history. You can see it after you visit teh parliament . There are volunteers inthe church who will discuss the history and by the way do not mention the word fire. It is all made of timber. They have flower arrangements at the entrance, awsome. It is worth a visit

Old St Paul's is a very special place. We have been to many weddings and funerals, musical recitals, and more, there over a long number of years. Its mellow light, remarkable stained glass windows - ethereal with the sun shining through them - golden timber construction and amazing acoustics make it very lovely indeed. If fortunate enough to hear the... More

I called in at St Paul's while filling in some time. Not having been there for a few years I was surprised to find a lovely gift shop with unusual and special gifts. The church itself is a piece of Wellington history that is a must for any overseas visitors especially.

Lovely church in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of a city. I would recommend those who enjoy architecture to make a visit to this church...or those would need to find some quite in a busy city.
