Small but worth visiting

Nice small zoo but have almost everything you might want to see in a zoo. Hilly location makes it good for walk. Child friendly. Can see Kiwi here.

Zoos have changed a lot over the years, wellington zoo is no exception. I can remember visiting when they had chimpanzee tea parties. What were we thinking? Now its more about allowing animals to be as natural as they can in a captive situation. I recommend taking 2 or 3 hours to walk around this zoo. Don't rush, and take... More

As far as Zoo's go, I have seen some shocking ones... however, Wellington Zoo is a joy. From the keeper talks and animal feedings, to the interactive layout, the whole zoo experience is lovely. Tucked into a small space on the hill, the zoo appears much larger and more exotic because of the superb landscaping. Wandering around the NZ section... More

While being a big zoo fan, enjoyed a day visiting in December. Staff were helpful and we enjoyed the tiger talk and feeding - HIGHLY recommend that.

Having gone to Wellington Zoo many times over the years I have slightly mixed feelings about it. While it is a smallish zoo and the attractions are well laid out I find it slightly disappointing considering it is a capital city zoo. There is the ability to feed certain animals (giraffe). There is access for wheelchairs and there is a... More

Plan your visit according to the animals you want to see - the keeper talks / feeding times provide the best viewing opportunities. I went to the red panda talk, and one was dining on bamboo right next to the viewing platform. Another visitor commented that in their native habitat red pandas are high in the trees and not visible... More

The zoo has really transformed itself, from cages to open spaces with animals actually free to wander about. We went early in a Sunday and every single animal was out and about. Great activity with kids, ours are 10 and 12 and really enjoyed it. Great places for picnics all around the zoo.

The neighbors theme where there is Aussie animals was a special one, loved the showy otters and the pandas in their relaxed mood. The staff are very helpful in so many ways. It was a great day in the zoo.
