Te Papa Tongarewa is a free public museum, with particularly good Mauri exhibits, including whole "buildings" you can explore. Canoes, weapons, tools, crafts, etc. A great place to spend the day if you hit inclement weather......or even if you don't!

They spent a lot of money on the building and it shows, maybe they could have made the paid attractions a little cheaper for their locals.

I have now visited Te Papa Museum on a number of occasions now, it changes some displays and retains the favourites. There is so much to see and do that after 3 visits with the kids we still haven't seen it all, it is excellent. Steeped in Maori history too, this really does teach us about the interesting culture.

Windy Wellington has no finer attraction than Te Papa. The Museum of New Zealand is awesome. Te Papa leaves most of Australia's museums looking like antique shops! There is plenty to do and see but you'll need the day to experience it all. Seriously, if you're in Wellington and you don't visit Te Papa, you're crackers!! .......and you can buy...

We had been told by friends that they spent 5 hours or more in Te Papa, but stupidly had only 3. We could easily have stayed longer or gone back more times had we had the time. There are wonderful interactive displays, lots of history and science, and a great collection of historic and contemporary art.
