There's a free shuttle. It's like visiting jurassic park for birds. Everything's well maintained, the cost of entry is very reasonable. Go here or regret it. We went in and were just awestruck with how magical it was - from the interactive exhibits to the well maintained trails, benches, signs, indoor enclosure... I could see myself living here. Go.

Hard to believe you are so close to the city when you step into Zealandia. You can either take a short and easy walk up to the upper dam and back or for the more intrepid you can take much longer and more challenging walks. Our particular favourite is to walk up to the Karori windmill and back which is... More

It's great for hiking generally, but I'm glad I waited for one of the guided tours. I would have missed so much but for the guide (this wonderful middle aged woman) pointing out both flora and fauna. The entry fee for night-time hikes is awfully expensive.

This is a very nice sanctuary and has some interesting information. I recommend a visit. The place is close to Wellington and is a nice accompaniment to the Botanical garden.

Excellent indoor exhibit lets visitors explore the history of the sanctuary and the different NZ wildlife. Outside there are lots of different options for walking and seeing the wildlife. The birdsong area is wonderful! Cafe is nice place to relax and refuel, and the shop has nice things.

My recent first visit to Zealandia won't be my last. I have lived in the region for 8 years and never been to this Gem on the fringe of Wellington City. I went with a friend from overseas and we took advantage of the free Zealandia shuttle from the Wellington iSite and back again. We spent a few hours wandering... More

This is a beautifully maintained Sanctuary where you can have conducted tours, or wander around at your leisure. The guides are mostly volunteers i think - and the settings are beautiful. There is a delightful electric boat ride taking you through the middle. Well worth a visit.

I visit zealandia regularly. There's shelter on a windy wellington day and shade on a baking hot day. There's always something new to see as the bird and tuatara sightings and behaviour changes with the seasons or time of day. The cafe has improved heaps in the last 18 months and the service is awesome. It's one of the most... More

One of the great things about New Zealand is that you can walk in the wild without fear of being eaten, bitten or stung. Zealandia is a 225 wild life sanctuary where the residents are tame because they are safe, and you therefore stand a better chance of seeing them than you would in the wild. The valley is gorgeous,... More

This place was excellent. Easy to access via a bus link from the top of the 'cable car' - you would never know you were in the city at all. If you want to do some 'walking' or 'tramping', but only have a short time, there are amazing walks in this wonderful sanctuary that can take you as long as... More
