Zelandia AKA the Karori wildlife sanctuary is a very special and unique place. Conservation of threatened native species is at its heart. You can take shorter and gentle or longer and more challenging walks and hear the sounds and see the sights of unusual NZ native birds flying, singing or playing. It is quite unique given is is a short... More

I visited Zealandia last week on an unseasonably sunny day, sandwiched between two wet and cold days. I was very surprised at how beautiful it was. I wasn't sure what I expecting but I have never seen a wildlife sanctuary where the birds were completely just doing their own things and not fussed by the humans trekking past. The track... More

A place where lical birds can live without the fear of newly introduced mammals, Zealandia offers a sanctuary to animals and peace of mind to men. Surrounded by China wall kind of fence, animals are quite friendly to tourists. This is a well executed conservation project and deserves to be praised. Walk up to the dam and then see the... More

The first thing to know is that Zealandia is about native birds, reptiles (Tuatara) and very, very big insects (the Giant Weta). It is NOT a zoo, and it doesn't come with flashing lights and hi-tech stuff like Te Papa. What it IS is a beautiful walk (short or long is up to you) through native bush, with the chance... More

The volunteers are passionate to say the least, irritatingly so. On entry you need to "shake your handbag so the vermin come out" so don't take your pet mice with you on this trip. The bad bits - a little bit muddy as to be expected so dont wear your high heels. The best bits - the inside exhibits are... More

Spent a relaxing 2 hours at Zealandia. Though the weather was cold with a little light rain, it was still a very worthwhile experience. Lots of flora and fauna to see. With a variety of walking tracks, you're able to set your own pace.

This place is really nice to go for a walk on a sunny day. There are many tracks that lead as far as the wind turbine and a historic dam 1/2 way up. We were lucky enough to get 2 1 year memberships for our wedding,
