I had high hopes for the Sanctuary but I found it to lack the 'wow factor' that this place promises on the council website. I have had much more amazing experiences with our wild life and landscape tramping some of our walking tracks around the Wellington area. Certainly not worth the $18 (or so) or the millions that the council... More

We did enjoy it and would go back again. The cost was more than the value unless you consider part of the price is invested in the preservation of a great resource. Be prepared to walk.

It's a beautiful site to enjoy for relaxing! Their goal is to create a location that has only indigenous animals and so far, they have done a great job of accomplishing it with miles/kilometers of a special fence to keep outsiders out. At minimum you want 90 minutes to two hours but more if you love birds or just the... More

Having lived in Wellington for thirty years and seen how much council via rates has poured into this facility every year I was expecting a world class attraction. Sadly I was so disappointed with the experience. With the millions of Dollars and thousands of hours of free labour via volunteers (guides etc.) I guess my expectations were unreasonable but I... This is a very well done place to see all types of native birds in a nice sanctuary. It was a great place for many photo opportunities, and had very nice trails all around the park. Easy to get to and a fun place to enjoy the different wildlife including lizards . Be sure to hike all the way to the... More

They have a free bus that runs from the i site and the top of the tram to Zealandia. They have reintroduced lots of endangered species here and they are now flourishing so there are plenty of opportunities to see animals that few others have ever seen. As the site is so large you can not hear or see the... More

When we went there we had GrabOne vouchers which made it reasonably priced. I would have been disappointed had I paid full price. It's a lovely walk but there really aren't a lot of birds to be seen.

Those of us who have listened to and read about the recovery efforts of our endangered birds will understand when the feelings one would have when a black Robin comes out and not only dances around your shoes, but also pecks at them. It was with a full and happy heart that a very special afternoon was spent here with... More

We saw masses of different birds on our visit. On the recommendation of the chap on reception we went up to the feeders in the discovery area, which was swarming with hihi and bellbirds. They were very tame and perched in the trees right next to us. We also had a north island robin hopping round our feet there. There... More

This is a wonderful place to visit. We were at Zealandia on a not very pleasant day but this did not deter us from enjoying the New Zealand bush and the wonderful walk around the reserve. This is a sanctuary for the endangered birds and animals of New Zealand and their welfare is taken care of by the most passionate... More
